Ah, so already very high before he started eating. How long does he wait after injecting before he eats?

Has he been given any guidance at all about how many carbs to eat for his meals? Has he got a call back booked from his team?

Although his blood sugar has come down a tiny bit, it’s basically the same (meters have a 15% margin of error so 27, 28 are basically the same). I’ve had diabetes decades but I’d be seeking medical advice if my sugars were that high and I couldn’t get them down. I guess he’s not been told about correction doses yet?

We’ve got an appointment tomorrow with the diabetic clinic so hopefully they can help us.

I’m sure the clinic will be able to offer him advice. My concern - and apologies if I sound bossy or fussy - is how he is now. I’m genuinely worried that his sugar is that high, and I’m worried at what will happen overnight.

He says he feels fine, but as I said earlier was fine even with DKA. He’s going to test again at 11. He’s drinking lots. What should I do?

If you phone 111 you can get a callback from a doctor. That’s what I would do.

Stress he’s newly diagnosed. Emphasise he was admitted with DKA when he was diagnosed, and tell them his blood sugar.

If you can’t get through to 111 or he becomes ill or his blood sugar doesn’t come down significantly, I’d go to A&E. 27/28 is a very high blood sugar. He is at risk of DKA.

Ok thank you. He’s just re tested it’s now 22

That’s better, but I wouldn’t relax until it was down into the teens. I’d also set alarms to test during the night just to make sure it hasn’t crept up. I hope he’s ok. I’m off to bed now, but if in any doubt seek medical advice. They’d expect you to and it would be a genuine reason to call.
