They say that you should try every hing at least once in your lifetime, unfortunately i have been dancing and teaching morris dancing for the last 30 years. Every village needs an idiot, i'm rayleigh's.
Oh dear Malcolm...that'll teach me to read the posts thoroughly in future...shot myself in the foot there.😱😱😱.

Hello Malcolm and welcome to the forum. :D I've never known a Morris dancer before, how interesting. I've only seen them on telly. I like to watch things with canals and barges and they often show Morris dances and stuff. I'd think that was very good exercise. How did you get into that?

Re the docs, nod to everything and research/measure and then do what's best for you.

Hi mikey- Both forms of dancing that i do demand that i black my face- molly dancing is an east anglian tradition supposedely coming over with the saxons, Border morris dancing was traditionally done in the herefordshire, worcestershire and shropshire areas- i think the intention was to scare the welsh-can't think of anything better to do in these areas.

Hi Bubbsie-hope eveything ok. Being a office worker for many years- commuting to london and the late in life having a family has made me lazy- hence finding an alternate form of exercise-the ailments are true which make a lot of good forms of activities uncomfortable, ie riding a bike, walking long distances- which i loved to do, even sitting in a chair can cause discomfort. I now walk with a pronounced limp and disguise this when i can. But to be be positive i will try- as i said anything in order to keep on top of this condition. I know that there are many of us in the same boat and together we will win.

Hi MikeyB- Interestingly- The story of the Coconut Men is quite complex- some theories saying it has much to do with Cornwall and mines. Since i am of cornish extraction i can not confirm that this is true- though they are great to watch.

Hi - not being competative I needed a team form of exercise- my partner was already a dancer and invited up on a 'day of dance'. Whilst there thought that I could do better, so i had to prove it to myself that I could. That was 34 years ago, since then I have been hooked ever since.See

Hi Malcolm. From what I know of Morris dancing, the level of exercise you are getting is just fine, there's no need to punish your body further. Except, as you said, it's worth trying anything once.

The only dancing of that type where I used to live in Lancashire, fifteen miles down the road in the Rossendale Valley were the Bacup Coconut Dancers. These guys originally danced in black face. The reason for the coconuts and black face take some explaining, at the end of which the listener has usually fallen asleep. Probably not the thing to take on a world tour.
Hi Mikeyb- Story of the coconut men quite complex- whether it is true coming from cornish pirates and mining- lost in history. am interested since i am of cornish extraction. But i do dark with blackened/coloured face as a disguise

Welcome Malcolm - is that Raleigh in Essex? Morris Dancing is wondrous - keep at it. 🙂
Hi I Live in Rayleigh but my sides are based in Maldon and the other at Good Easter, both in Essex- Where are you based since throughout the year there are many events where this takes place

Malcolm...hoping I've got your sense of humour right...that made me laugh so much...hope that was your intention?😉.
Hi- have been folk dancing for since school days- morris dancing some 35 years- even with various injurires which i try to disguise when dancing and which can be painfull. Too long in the tooth to stop things which i enjoy

I've switched to long walks with the dog Malcolm...about all I can tolerate these days...good for you...any activity is beneficial...although always thought Morris dancing looked quite aggressive...and...sometimes downright dangerous:D.

Hello- I've just recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it would appear to run in the family, brother, mother aunts all have had it. Know that it can usually be controlled by diet- but am a very fussy eater- not eating many vegetables, oily fish, eggs etc., and eat too many foods high in fat, cholestrol, etc, mainly bread of different forms and rice.
is any one in the same boat as me.
Have a go at the Low Carb diet. It might make a big difference. Good luck & welcome 🙂
