New to BG readings

hi folks

Following advice on here, i bought mself a BG meter and started today.

My waking reading was 9.5, which is obviously up high. I had 2 scrambled eggs (made with semi skimmed milk)for breakfast and two hours later the reading was 12.1.

I have only been diagnosed 6 days but I'm a little shocked by my high numbers!
 
Hi @Mark C , have you tried making your scrambled eggs without milk? I have stopped putting milk in anything other than coffee, and limit myself to 4 mugs a day which is 100 calories and nearly 10 carbs (semi-skimmed). I'm surprised your reading came out so high though, you didn't sneak a slice of toast in did you? 😉
Are you on medication? I think it took my metformin a couple of weeks to kick in and start reducing my blood sugar so maybe it's just early days for you yet.
Monitoring is the way to go though. I keep a food diary so I know what I can and can't eat. Eggs are the top of my list of things I can eat, but everyone is different.
 
I've just started Metformin on Monday so I'm taking 500mg per day, gradually building up to 2000mg per day. I suppose it's going to take a bit of time for it to have any effect at all.

Doesn't half make me anxious!

I was recently diagnosed too, in the beginning of July. my HbA1c was 138 and my BG was 19. I immediately gave up refined sugar and flour and starting reducing my carbs. It took a couple of weeks to get my BG down to between 7-8 and now they are mostly in the 5-6 range, sometimes in the 4s. So keep doing what you’re doing and it will come down. I found that a walk after a meal worked a treat and seems to work very well in tandem with low carbs. I do drink milky drinks now and then and eat enough low car fruit like strawberries and raspberries plus pomegranate seeds along with above ground veg to make sure I get enough fibre. I’m on Metformin and Gliclazide although I hope to come off the Gliclazide now my BG are in range. I’m getting my next HbA1c in a couple of weeks but will know more then. But it does take a week or two for the numbers to come down. Lots of advice on ere saying you don’t want it to come down too quickly but I don’t know anything more about that....

It's early days for you. Your HbA1c is very high so I think your first challenge is the diet and lifestyle changes to bring that down.
The blood sugar meter will help you to see which foods are good / bad for you and also help you monitor once you've got the HbA1c down - which I'm sure you will.

If you find that testing causes more anxiety then it helps at the moment, then do give it a break if you need to. Maybe give it some time for the Metformin to have more of an impact and then see what sort of readings you get after that.
Like others have said, it is early days and any changes will take some time to show so try not to get too disheartened.
 
It usually takes a fortnight to 3 weeks for Metformin to have its proper effect on your body and ditto each time you increase or reduce the dose. This lot's a marathon - NOT a sprint.
 
Thanks all, I'm grateful for the support. I guess my anxiety is more caused by the feeling of not really understanding it rather than the tests themselves, and I appreciate it's going to take time.

I've already learnt a large amount just by reading these forums. Good to know this place is here!
 
I add either a little butter or olive oil, just a splash to lubricate the pan, and then eggs, then cheese and a finely sliced tomato on the top.

Although the numbers are high (early days and all that), does this mean the meal is a good one for me?
 
Hi, I Am new to all this too and find it all very confusing!

I recommend the Learning Zone, it really helped me to stop worrying so much and was very informative.

Such a small ‘meal rise’ could be down to inherent variation between strips themselves.

And yes, you are right... the numbers themselves are far less important at this stage than the differences between them.

For your breakfast of scrambled egg, I wondered whether part of that might be nothing to do with what you ate, but might be a form of ‘dawn phenomenon’ where the liver releases glucose at the start of the day to ‘help’ you get up and going 🙄
 
Just have the eggs made with best butter. Yummy. 🙂
