Hello everyone, I'm newly diagnosed with T2 and I really hate it. I'm in the denial stage, but I am following quite strictly a GI diet prescribed by the doctor. Hopefully, get to know a few more of you in the near future. Kx

Hi Karen welcome to the club that no one wants to join and our very friendly forum. You’ve probably got a ton of questions, so ask away and we’ll do our best to help.
It’s not unusual to have no symptomsI had none, it does come as a shock doesn’t it.

I know it doesn’t seem like it now but in time it does get easier.

Thank you x You're right about this 'anti-club!' I'm not on medication so fingers crossed it won't come to that. I'm just taking it easy - off the bad white stuff which I used to love, adding fibre but still got readings averaging 7.7mol. Well, I'll keep you posted and be looking on here every so often. Take care, Kx

Welcome Karen 🙂 It’s not as bad as you think once you get your head around it. Burgen bread is what most of us use, it’s a soya & linseed low carb bread available in most supermarkets. Remember that it’s carbs as well as sugar that are the enemy, also fruit has a lot of sugar, although some people do tolerate a few berries but I can’t 😳
Keeping a food diary is a great way to track what works for your body, testing before you eat and two hours after will show you, ideally you are looking for no more than 2 to 3 mml difference, if it’s more than that then I would cut it out or adapt 😉

Thank you, see this is where I thought fruit was a friend... I like the Burgen bread but have been 'trying' to make my own mother starter for sourdough - in this heat it's a nightmare haha. I'm definitely starting a food diary, my food doesn't change that much so may be more helpful. Thank you for the great advice x

Hi and welcome to the forum. I didn't have any symptoms when I was diagnosed, I found out purely by chance at a health fair at work. I miss fruit, as I can only tolerate a small amount of certain fruits now.

Thank you. That must have been a shock for you! I love all fruits and vegetables, its going to be double hard now. I've started keeping a food diary so thats going to make me think more about my choices for the GI diet my doctor has put me on. I watched a programme on BBC about carbs and sugars with Dr Zander and I was very surprised by all the information. Kx

I had no symptoms either I went to the doctors with a sore hip. I must admit I did sulk for the first week and ate all the things I know I shouldn’t it was great lol. Had to get myself together though. Have not cut out carbs completely but switched from the white versions and cut the portion size. Increased my veg and fruit intake .... no more grapes though they are little sugar bombs.... it’s a steep learning curve

We often have to be careful with fruit. Some fruits are quite high in carbs because of their fructose (a type of sugar) Berries are often tolerated better. Off the top of my head 100g of strawberries have around 8g carbs 🙂 where as a banana 😱
A book called, Carbs and cals is often recommended here , their are plenty of pics to help you decide the best choices even when eating out.
I believe their are two sizes of book and an app available

I was especially when the nurse said at the health fair that she was tempted to send me straight to A&E as my levels were so high! Finger prick test at the time was 26.7!!!
