New T2 After Some Advice

Hi All,

I recently went to the GP with having classic symptoms of diabetes and they checked my blood sugar level which came out at 23.8

After visiting the hospital for further tests they have put me on Gliclazide and Metformin 1x500mg twice a day.

My hba1c reading came back from the hospital as 128 after some blood tests.

I started the medication 10 days ago and my readings are between 4.5 and 9.7.

Should I be worried about anything as this seems too quick for the medication and diet I have started to have that much of an effect?

As I'm not on medication so I can't say how quickly it starts to work, but many members are, so someone should be able to give you an indication on how quickly it work for them.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis :care:

Metformin is a medication which helps increase insulin sensitivity, and reduce glucose output from the liver, while Gliclazide encourages the pancreas to release more insulin than it naturally would. Both meds work best when balanced with an appropriate glucose-friendly menu.

When have you been advised to measure your BG levels? Blood glucose naturally rises and falls during the day, particularly in response to carbohydrates in food, along with exercise and activity, illness, alcohol, and a host of other factors. Keeping track of the context around each BG reading can really help you interpret the information they provide.

@NorthernSoutherner I found this website in November having routine GP check up and my first HbA1C was 129 similar to yours.

I was also put on gliclazide and Metformin. I do not know the answer to your Qs however I know after being on gliclazide for first few weeks along with exercise and diet drastic changes I came off gliclazide so now just metformin.

My nurse wanted me to do repeat HbA1C after 2 months however from advice from forum I am waiting until after next week as I would have been on medication and lifestyle change for 3 months.

I recall one forum reply mentioned that turnover of blood cells was 3 months so that would give me a truer figure to know if I improved or not.

Readings wise I did find that numbers did go down on glucose monitor as like you was double figures before started medications. I do find if low carb diet numbers reduce quickly however have to be careful if on gliclazide because of risk of going too low and hypos.

I have found this website amazing source of support especially when first diagnosed it was overwhelming and daunting!
 
Turnover of red blood cells (the Hb) is 'between 90 and 120 days' hence the '3 months' thing is only approximate, much like a lot of things!
