I'm here because @ColinUK told me about these forums
I have been diagnosed as having Type 2 Diabetes, I was first diagnosed a few months back and I probably have it because I am both obese and have a family history of it
I look forward to enjoying these forums and getting some ideas as to how to live with diabetes!
Has @ColinUK told you about the different methods that people sue to control or reverse their Type 2 diabetes?
Many of put it into 'remission' (which is not the same as a cure but almost as good), just by changing what we eat.
For some it only takes a small change (like eating a low carbohydrate breakfast such as eggs instead of breakfast cereal). For others it requires a rather bigger change but can still be done without need for medication or any additional exercise or any conscious calorie restriction.
Hello and welcome. We are all happy to offer suggestions for you. It would help to know something about you, for example what your HbA1c was, if you were prescribed medication, any other medical issues and medications you might have. That way we can tailor our replies.
I expect Colin told you about the Learning Zone (orange tab above). That is an excellent teaching aid, best worked through one module a day so you can take it in. As you mentioned you were obese, I suggest you start first with the food module, then exercise.
I also suggest you start a food diary, being ruthlessly honest. I keep my diary on an app, but it can be done with pen and paper, or a spreadsheet. I use NutraCheck (UK based with a small fee), but there is MyFitnessPal (USA based and free), plus others (find with Google).
The important thing about Type 2 is to reduce carbs (not just sugar because carbs turn into glucose). The suggested maximum daily amount is 130gm. If you are having more than that you should reduce slowly, to avoid causing eye problems. There are various methods, from eating low carb (which I do), to the Newcastle diet (shakes based). Either should help you lose weight.
Exercise will help too. That doesn't necessarily mean pounding away at a gym. It could be a daily walk (with or without dog), cycling, in the swimming pool. If you are not used to exercise, please build up slowly!!! I do aquafit 2/3 times a week, and there are classes daytime (for wrinklies) and evening (for workers).
Here to help any time.
Do ask away with any questions! Diabetes can be very individual, and seemingly illogical at times. There are a few general principles which often apply, but diabetes can be a fickle foe, and it can be a question of finding your own way through the maze of options and alternatives to put together your own ‘diabetes toolkit’ of strategies, approaches, and also tech / meds if those help.
We have lots of folks using lots of different approaches (and variations on a variety of themes), so for any question you ask you’ll get a bunch of different options to consider.
Indeed. Perhaps you would enjoy participating in the "7 day waking average" thread where @ColinUK entertains us with Colins Cultural Corner posts on a regular basis and we just have chats - like a diabetic coffee morning 😉
