Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Good Morning Everyone,

My name is Keiron and I was diagnosed about 3 month ago. I have joined because I am really struggling to get my head round everything and I don’t feel like I can speak to my family about it all due to embarrassment.

I hope this forum can help me change my lifestyle and get my life back on track.

Thanks for reading

Takes a little while to get a perspective on things Keiron and you will get loads of help on here to speed the process up. How did you come to be diagnosed?

Welcome KD. Really good luck & well done for joining. Have you got yourself a blood test meter. Have a look into that ?

Thanks for the reply and I hope I can take as much from this forum as possible. I went to the doctors as I was having bad headaches and not sleeping. The doctor took blood straight away and it came back as diabetes. For some reason I can’t get my head round the massive changes needed to control it.

Welcome to the forum Keiron, from a fellow T2.

I'll dig a little deeper if I may. Did your doctor do a finger prick test or did he take blood from your arm to send off to a lab. I ask because one of the things you will have to get your head around is the numbers and what they mean. Normally diabetes is diagnosed from taking a blood sample and sending it off to get what is called a HbA1C reading. A prudent doctor would have got a lot of other things checked at the same time. So did you get any feed back other than you were diabetic? Did your doctor suggest a way forward for you? Have you been prescribed any medication? On diagnosis you should be put in the system and get an appointment with a diabetic nurse. She should do a physical check and arrange for some other stuff designed to make sure that you are not showing any signs of the things that diabetes can lead to if not dealt with.

Personally I would not think about a meter until you have got a decent perspective on where you are and where you need to get. They can be a very powerful feedback tool when you know what you want to achieve but diving in early might just confuse the issue.

By the way, nothing embarassing about diabetes. It happens. It is manageable and type 2 is easier to manage than type 1. Many of us have been there and most have got things sorted.

Hi, Keiron. Understand how you feel - I was stunned by my diagnosis too but after only 8 weeks of a new diet and exercise regime I have it under control to the extent that I've been allowed to come off my medication to see how I get on without it. Still have to stick with the diet, of course, but it shows what's possible with Type 2. Don't despair.
Well done Anitram. I like that attitude 😎

Welcome Kieron 🙂

It’s honestly not as daunting as it sounds. Change is always scary, but you’ll get masses of support and helpful advice here.

I find the diet is great - in the warm weather I can manage huge salads for breakfast along with whatever I fancied from the fridge - eggs, cheese, tuna, kippers, sausages, left over meat from dinner and a mug of coffee with cream.
I did not need to eat again until the evening, when I might have roast meat, or fish, shell fish or seafood and various low carb veges roasted with the meat or stirfried. Mushrooms cooked under chicken thighs in the halogen oven, with green peppers, courgette aubergine cauliflower green beans - then sugar free jelly, real custard, berries, cream - I would not go back to the cholesterol lowering stodge (which didn't do anything but make me fat) not for a pension.
