Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all 56 years old diagnosed 2 months ago type 2 , struggling at the moment, on medication for clinical depression and anxiety, I'm over weight and cannot find the correct diet to get better, few years ago I was at gym Saturday and Sunday but feel now just can't be bothered, not on medication for diabetes as yet doctor says I have to try through my diet but I have no idea what I can eat or not eat, also sugar cravings are very bad , I'll probably have to go on tablets.

Hi Daniel
Welcome to the forum. I’m sorry to hear you seem to be having a tough time at the moment. I was only diagnosed this year and it’s scary but I can tell you there are so many kind and knowledgeable people on here you will get good advice. Maybe have a read through the discussions on food and weight loss. Many people find reducing carbs helps (it’s helped me) but you might be surprised at other things you can eat that won’t affect your blood glucose levels.
Small steps. It’s not a race. Have a read around the forum and maybe think about getting a test kit so you can monitor your own levels and see how different food affects you (we are all different). Every little step will help you feel more in control and if you are able to get your levels down you will feel better emotionally as well.
If you do have to take medication- it doesn’t matter. It might be temporary or you might need it long term but if it helps get your levels under control it’s a good thing in my book.
Ask lots of questions on here, someone else will have been there or will know the answer.
Good luck 🙂

Hi @Daniel lucas some nice comments from @Loulou23, follow the advice and keep us informed on your progress 🙂.

Welcome to the forum Daniel from a fellow T2.
Diet. It's not food that raises our blood glucose (BG). It's carbohydrates in particular. That's breackfast cerial, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta. We can eat some. The question is which, how much and what with.
I suggestion self testing (the Codefree has some of the cheapest strips). Keep a food diary, along with a record of your levels. Test before and after eating. Hopefully, after a couple of week you'll start to see a pattern.

Welcome Daniel, it takes a while to adapt your diet and get used to eating different things, I chose to go low carb so I cut out all rice, pasta, potatoes and bread other than Burgen bread. I’m now 6 months in and 3 stone lighter with my bloods under control 😉 I’m not really a gym person so I borrow my neighbours dog and walk for around 30 to 40 mins whenever I can. It honestly hasn’t been hard work and I am really enjoying my meals😛 take your time and read as much as you can, everything you need to know is here. Testing to work out what foods work best for you is vital, I would suggest keeping a food diary for a few weeks and track against your blood results.....most importantly don’t be afraid to ask anything :D
