Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi - I am a new member, I was diagnosed in May 2018. I may have posted here before, but my login details appear to have been forgotten.

I am trying to learn about diabetes, how it affects me, and how to adapt my life.

Hello @Stuart B welcome. You have come to the right place for info and cyber support.

Feel free to ask any questions you have about diabetes, we’ll do our best to help.

A little more info would help us , what diabetes medications if any are you on and how did you come to be diagnosed and problems you may be h@ving.

Basically whether or not you are on Diabetes meds T2 needs some dietary changes , we are probably going to supprise you here and if able some regular exersize

Their is an awful lot of misinformation out there about diabetes and sadly that healthy eating plate (or whatever it’s called now )we are often shown/told about is not really suitable for us.

This list is a sample to give you a few ideas
The good news is we usually have no problems with protein or good fats. So if you eat meat , meat is fine as are high meat content sausages and burgers, cheese cream, eggs, mushrooms, sweeteners, veg that grows above ground .

It’s cabohydrates esp the fast @cting ones our bodies can’t handle too well .
Sorry got to go , b@ck later.

Hi Lin

Thanks for the response. I am type 2, managed with 1000mg metformin twice a day. I was also diagnosed with high cholesterol, and going through tests for high blood pressure. My HBA1C was 106 non fasting and 102 fasting at the time of diagnosis. I am doing a first steps course in a few weeks time. I have reduced my carbs, but still get tired after eating small meals. I joined the gym today, time to work on a healthy body and mind. I have been managing depression and anxiety as well due to a very chaotic career and home life.

Hi Stuart, welcome to the forum 🙂
I can relate to the chaotic career and home life o_O and the high starting figure for bg, happily I am now 3 months in and can honestly say my life has changed for the better and my bg is now a steady 5.5 (around 41). I chose to follow the advice of the people here with lived experience rather than what the nurse and dietician advised on my course, I cut out rice, pasta, potatoes and bread (I do eat Burgen bread, soya & linseed low carb), along with the obvious cakes and sugary bits. I spent about a week as miserable as could be, convinced there was nothing nice to eat and there wasn’t much point in living....then I started to read...and read a bit more..and more..I started experimenting with fresh food and amazingly started to enjoy eating without the bloating and enjoying what I ate! At the same time I borrowed a neighbours dog and started walking, just round the block at first, then further and further and was shocked to find I started looking forward to it, came home feeling relaxed and calm...de-stressed from a chaotic day at work  The best part of it all is that my weight is dropping and I’m not even trying :D

H Cathy - that is very reassuring. I am off sick from work for a few weeks at the moment so will take advantage of the gym. Some symptoms have improved with diet which is good. X

Hi Stuart, welcome to the group.... Lots of support & information here

A couple of things to get you started

1/ Many of our members recommend self-testing (shhhhh,,,, Don;t mention that to your medical support group, they will try & discourage you), the cheapest self funded one is the SD Codefree from Amazon

2. Cut or reduce carb sources such as Bread, Rice, pasta, Cereals & Starchy vegetables, instead replace them with green leafy vegetables grown above ground

Thanks Martin. I have bought a machine and test when I eat something new just to get an idea. Fresh bread sent me through the roof, whereas chips and pie was not so bad - was just trying to see what it was like with some extremes. Tonight I made healthy kfc, and did roasted carrots with some chunky wedges - was going to be addictive no other vegetables, but go5 caught up with my son with ADHD who was being very demanding, I would say it was not too bad a meal, especially as two out of my three drumsticks did not have the coating, just the marinade to reduce carbs a little more.
