Relationship to Diabetes
Hello All

My husband has just found out that he has diabetes, it was not a total shock as his father also had it. His father was insulin dependant, had daily dialysis and also lost both legs before he passed away.

My husband and I have no children, we enjoy socialising several times a week, which more often than not revolves around food. We work long hours, which means convenience foods are a staple, including takeaways and snacks.

Because of the history I am determined to support a more healthier lifestyle and the time has now come we can not bury our heads in the sand but in all honesty this whole situation scares me.

Any great words of wisdom or any advice anyone can give me would be more than welcome 🙂

Hi Beth do you know what type your Husband is( it will help make sure you get the right information) I was diagnosed just over 2 weeks ago and it is scary and can be confusing the do’s and don’t . I’ve learned carbs are one of our worst enemy as well as anything high in sugar. Bread pasta rice potatoes and anything starchy isn’t great so reducing or removing them is a good start. There are lots of very knowledgeable people on the forum. Ask questions. Have a rant there is always someone around to help and support you and your husband.

Welcome to the forum, diagnosis does come as a bit of a shock, but with your support you can get through this.

What medication your husband is on, particularly insulin, can make a difference to the exact advice. As does being T1 or T2.
I believe there has been changes in the use of insulin over the years, including different type.

He'll need to manage carbohydrates, potatoes, rice, bread etc. If he keeps a food diary and self tests (recording his levels), he can see what affect food has. Hopefully he'll see a pattern. This will help in making changes.
