Type 2
hello everyone, firstly i would like to wish everyone a happy & healthy new year 2023 & ongoing
a bit about myself & my situation,& thank the team & everyone for letting me join & being part of it
I started as pre-diabetic about 4 yrs ago & I am now type 2 diabetic before I go further if I don't spell a word correctly plz forgive me I am dyslexic & of a range of other health problems inc inherited high cholesterol & high blood pressure & other medical conditions
I have decided this is my yr to change my health & learn about it & how & what I can do & make a plan & stick to it & improve my health
I wanted to add both my dad is a retired consultant cardiologist & my brother is a consultant but none of them have helped or offered any help or advice or support or encouragement, very sad but I am going to achieve my goals & this by joining has spurred me on to achieve my goals & work towards them,I already started to eat more healthy & I cut out all the unhealthy things ice cream, beer, sugar, ready meals it's very hard as I suffer with depression but I am never going to give in & will achieve my goals
thank you for accepting me into the community & I hope together we can all support & help each other reach our goals & make a difference in our lives & eat healthily & feel well

Welcome aboard @healthylifestyle 🙂 It's a club no-one wants to join but it's been the single best thing I've done about my diabetes since being diagnosed! Not only are there excellent tips and someone who will always know the answer to a question, but it's very friendly and non-judgmental which keeps me on the straight and narrow (well, most of the time! 😉)

Well the good news is that if you have an icecream maker or a bit of patience you can concoct real icecream with eggs and cream and add your own flavours and some sweetener if required.
Dr Atkins was a cardiologist, so you might find his 'New Diet Revolution' might help.
Eating low carb can help with feeling dismal - not sure just how effective it is for anything more serious, but it is difficult to feel down when faced with something like steak and mushrooms or a beef stir fry followed by coffee with cream.

A determination to change your lifestyle is a good start to getting your blood glucose better managed. There are many tasty meals you can have whilst eating low carb.
Remember it is all carbohydrates which convert to glucose so it is not just 'sugar' that you need to cut out.
This link may help you with a way forward in making some changes to your menu. It is a low carb approach based on real food. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a good resource for giving the carb value of various portion sizes of a whole range of foods and meals.
As well as what you eat it is how much, so portion control is important. Investing in some digital scales will help until you get your eye in for what is a portion.

thank you for the warm welcome, its a club I am well in mind to join & I am going to stick at it , I am or are ready for change but not in the short term but long term as one can get to a stage where they reversed it then fall back to where there were so long term healthy eating & exercise is my long term goal

Sounds like a good start on your journey, but there is no need to go for low fat unless you need to for other reasons as healthy fats will help you not to feel hungry.
There is a theory that longer periods between eating helps rather than snacking. Something promoted by Dr Jason Fung in his book The Diabetes Code.

It will perhaps be kinder to your metabolism and pancreas if you were to eat less frequently, so it gets a rest.
I eat twice a day at about 12 hour intervals and find it far easier to go out for the day as I don't need to bother to pack food to take with me.
It might be easer if you forget about the low fat - we need fats to convert into hormones and other essential substances, and to maintain our nervous systems so avoiding natural fat is not a good objective in the long term.

Hi , I don't think your father or brother is legally allowed to offer any medical help to family members.

A friend of mine who is a GP has his own doctor and his only comment to me is regarding my issue is nothing.

Welcome and a very happy healthy new year to you also.

Sad to say neither the retired cardiologist and consultant are qualified to advise you on diabetes unless they have trained in that area of course.

I would check in with your diabetic nurse or doctor at your GP surgery to be referred to an educational training course for type 2 at the hospital or through advice via diabetes UK home page training.
