Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have been put on Glucophage 1000mg twice a day. I just did my A1C and it’s 48. I have also been struggling to loose weight. I will appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks for having me here.

Welcome to the forum
An HbA1C of 48mmol/mol does indeed give you a diagnosis of diabetes but only just on the first rung of the ladder so it is disappointing that you have not been given the opportunity to bring it down by dietary changes rather than being put straight on medication. Many GP will allow people 3 months to give diet a try first.
The medication will only be a helping hand to assist changes to your diet in reducing carbohydrates as a low carb approach has been found to be successful in both losing weight and reducing blood glucose.
This link may help you with both some background info and some ideas for modifying you diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
The Learning Zone is also useful to have a look at to give you a better understanding of the condition.

Hi Ekirringirl, welcome to the forum.

Your numbers are only just within the diabetic range so you've got a good opportunity to get things in line again.

Was there any particular challenge you face regarding loosing weight? Sometime this is the reason doctors provide medication to give you a bit of support as you make some tricky lifestyle changes.

It might be easiest to keep a food diary for a week and then have a look at where you can reduce or replace carbs and sugar. You can refine things as you go on but this is a good place to start. We've got some helpful info on our site that's worth a look https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/i-have-type-2-diabetes, https://learningzone.diabetes.org.uk/.

Either way, take things a day at a time and let us know if you've got any specific questions that we can help with.

Hi @Ekirringirl
Glucophage is a brand version of the medicine Metformin which is the first line medication for Type 2 diabetics and has been shown to have a very small effect for weight loss ( only 8% lose 10% or more, only 28% lose 5% or more).
A low carb way of eating (not necessarily a calorie restriction) has a much bigger effect on both, with over 50% both losing over 10% of weight and reducing their diabetes medicines or putting T2 diabetes into remission (as I did).

I have found that my struggles with losing weight stopped as soon as I settled on eating low carb and refused to take any advice to the contrary.
I did not actually realise that I was loosing weight for some time, and then my trousers fell down. I had given up weighing myself some time before diagnosis, so I don't know the exact reduction, but well over 50 lb just fell off somewhere, somehow.
