Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi my name des just been diagnosed with type 2.i also have ms so having fun time at moment

Welcome to the forum Des from a fellow T2. There's a lot of corono virus at the moment. Normally we post about different things, wiith D a commen topic.
Is there anything you need to ask about diabetes.

HbA1c: this is a common diabetes test, which gives you an average over 8-12 weeks.
30(?) to 41 is "normal"
42 to 47 is called pre diabetic
48 and above gets you a diagnosis of diabetic (even if you go down again you're still down as a diabetic)
(Some on here have been diagnosed with a level around 100 and above).
Sometimes an old scale is used. On this 48=6.5.

This is a different measurement to the finger prick test (even though old scale for HbA1c looks similar). This gives your blood glucose (BG) level at that moment. This can vary through out the day and from day to day.

As a diabetic, it's carbohydrates that we've to watch in our diet. It's not food that rises our BG. It's carbohydrates in particular that do that.

Are you on any medication?

hi ralph yes I am on meds I have been started on 500mg of metformin ramping up ever 7 days till in reach 4,i already take 600mg of gabapentin 3xdaily for pain with my ms and damaged spine I have cage and plate in neck.i have been having probs with indigestion but just got off phone to drs and hes told me to take omeprazole but ty for welcoming me.the girl who lives with me has ms too so we on lockdown lol.

Hi desktop, So sad to hear of your difficulties. As Ralph says, it is eating carbohydrates, both sugary ones and starchy ones that cause high Blood Glucose in us Type 2 Diabetics.
So Lowering Carbs a lot while maintaining roughly same total Calories, is a good way to start on your way to remission.

Hello @desktop57
Welcome to the forum, there is a lot of knowledge and experience amongst the members and I hope you will find it helpful.

Things must very difficult for you and your partner, and I hope you have help and support available to you through the lockdown.

Regarding your T2 diagnosis, as Ian and Ralph have said many of us find that reducing carbohydrates helps to lower our blood sugar readings. One thing that it might be helpful to read to learn more about this is Maggie Davey's letter and the link
useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes Type 2 tab has some other information that may be useful.

I hope you will keep posting to let us know how it is going for you, and we will always try to answer any questions.
