Patients with underlying health conditions, including asthma and diabetes, have been instructed by the Government to take extreme measures to shield themselves from the coronavirus (Covid-19), starting this weekend.

From what i can make out on the gov.uk website it is only people with a higer risk of severe illness e.g cancer patients & severe chest conditions etc that are told to enter 3 month quarantine. Supposedly these group of people are being contacted from monday to advise what action to take.

It appears we are advised to practice stringent social distancing, although there is conflicting information out there and is easier said than done in certain jobs etc.

Personally i can see the UK going on lockdown similar to Italy in the coming days/weeks.

Hopefully we can all get through this, worrying times ahead.
 
Thanks Ian, information is changing daily, will be interesting to see what advice is tomorrow. It’s a very unsettling time.
 
Oh dear, looks like i'm self isolating for 3 months then. It's a good job i have family who will have my back.
feel sorry for the unfortunate ones that don't.
 
That Pulse article is dated 17th March. I think someone referred to it on here at the time. It links to the Government advice page as its source, and if you click that link, it doesn’t say anything about people with Diabetes etc self-isolating for three months, only the restricted list of more severe conditions like transplant or cancer cases. It’s sloppy journalism at its worst, and has caused a lot of unnecessary confusion.
 
I heard the (very confusing) press briefing where this was mentioned last Monday 16th, but repeatedly experts have confirmed that the 12 week isolation is for the more severely at risk group.

The .gov website has always been consistent, has been updated more recently (20th March) and states the same thing. Diabetes should be ‘social distancing’ and chemo/CF/dialysis//
transplant/others should fully isolate.

I am a bit shocked that this hasn’t been more clearly corrected/retracted as it has caused no end of worry and anxiety for hundreds of thousands of people.

The majority of new members over the last week have been citing it (and uncertainty over the confusion) as their reason for joining. 😡

Type 1 diabetes was specifically mentioned on BBC news tonight as being one of the vulnerable groups that should self isolate.

It does not appear on the Vunerable groups list on the Government website. I watched video on a leading Dr. Twitter feed in the last hour.
 
I don't know but it has been try address queries and clarity for his Twitter followers. He is one of the Doctors who has been fighting for more people to get Libre on the NHS.

This confusion is getting worse.

I think it would be good for Diabetes UK to get some clarity in this.

Evening BBC news bulletin was consistent with the .gov advice (social distancing rather than isolation).

Maybe they had complaints?!
 
Morning all,

There's some really confusing messaging out there isn't there! I have checked this out with the head of Care here at Diabetes UK who has been very clear that people with diabetes need to follow strict social distancing measures but do not need to self isolate for 12 weeks. The 12 week isolation is for those very high risk… some cancers, post transplant, respiratory conditions such as CF. Of course those with diabetes and in a high risk group must isolate, but not because of the diabetes. Hopefully that provides some clarity.
