Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hey all. Am a new type 2 diabetic which still isn't under control but getting there slowly 🙂

Hi Psycon, welcome to the forum 🙂 Are you on any medication for your diabetes? Anything you think we might be able to help with, please ask away! Also, have a look in our Useful links thread for links to lots of good information 🙂

Yes I am on two types of tablets for it. The problem I have is my sugar levels go up and down by quite a bit. When I was diagnosed I had a fasting level of about 12. I can get it down to 5-6 at times but even after just toast for breakfast it will shoot up to about 14-16 :/

A lot of people have difficulty eating carbs in the mornings as many people have increased insulin resistance at that time of day. Sometimes it can be preferable to have a protein-based breakfast (eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes etc.). I know there are a lot of people that cannot eat bread or cereals, but are OK with porridge. What sort of bread do you eat? Burgen soya and linseed is very tasty and gentler on the blood sugar levels. 🙂 If your levels are shooting up one or two hours after eating then you need to adjust either portion size, and see if that helps, or exclude what is causing it from your diet. Use your meter as described in Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S

Ahh I see. It's just normal white bread. I will have to try some different breakfasts as it does seem like the morning is when I have the most problem. Not a fan of wholemeal bread though lol. Thankyou for the advice. I guess it may take a while to work out what foods to avoid and what to have 🙂

White bread, unfortunately, is actually worse than pure sugar because the starch in it converts to glucose quicker than sucrose! 😱 If you read the link I gave and also try and get a copy of The GL Diet for Dummies it will give you a good grounding in how to select the foods and combinations of food that will release their energy slowly and steadily instead of in one big hit. Also, although you may think you don't like certain things it's worth persisting if they are good for your levels as your tastes will change - and possibly faster than you might think! 🙂

I will have to start having it then. Looks like I have a lot to learn and I will get a copy of that book thanks 🙂

Psycon hi and a warm welcome to the forum.

Hi Psycon and welcome to the forums. It's a steep learning curve this diabetes malarky but you will get there. As Northerner says, bread, especially first thing in the morning can cause problems for a lot of us. I find one slice of granary toast with a poached egg the best for keeping my levels decent in the morning. It's good you are testing though as it's the only way to find out what foods work for you. Are you getting your strips on prescription of buying your own? XXXXX

Yes I get them on prescription now which is a bonus. Just got my exemption card through too

Hi psycon. Welcome 🙂

Rob

It's good you are getting strips on prescription as many Type 2's can't get them. It's not just the money either. When I had to buy my own my GP wouldn't 'support' me testing so he wouldn't acknowledge my own readings. It didn't matter so much when I was using the readings to sort my diet etc out but when I had problems earlier this year he refused to listen to me and insisted I wait for my next check up to find out what was going on.

That's when I joined this place for advice.....and I've never looked back! XXXXX

That must have been horrible having no support from the doctor for them. My doctor was the opposite and thinks its great I test it as they use my results to see what it's been doing. You should try another doctor 🙂 yeah this site has already helped me more than I could have hoped for 🙂

Welcome to the forum from me.

I did some personal tests of different breads a while ago and confirmed that white bread was a definite "no no" for me (which is Ok by me, because I don't like the stuff anyway!) :D

Lack of support and difficulty getting strips on prescription seems to be the norm these days. Your doc sounds like a gem so keep hold of him! And this place is brilliant. I'm glad you feel you are getting help already. We're not doctors but we have a wealth of experience between us. So whatever questions you might have there's bound to be someone come up with an answer that works. XXXXX

Hi Psycon, welcome to the forum. I too had problems with bread in the morning mainly, even tried baking my own.( Was determined to still have my toast if I could):D About 10 grams of carb was my maximum and ok if I had some protein with it.

Welcome to the forums Psycon 🙂

Ok blood sugar this morning was 8.4 when I woke up. After two slices of brown bread for breakfast and 2 hours after eating them its now 14.6 so I think any toast or bread in the morning is not for me. Will try eggs and bacon ect next I think 🙂

If you don't want to give up bread straight away, I would try getting some Burgen Soya and Linseed bread - it's really nice, honest! Most major supermarkets stock it. Try having one slice with a poached or scrambled egg and see how you go with that. If the brown bread you had was ordinary wholemeal then I'm afraid that (you guessed it!) it's not that much better than white bread - better to have wholegrain or granary, or Burgen as suggested. If your levels still go high then you might want to try porridge - again the best type is proper porridge with coarse/jumbo oats, not the instant stuff. Once you get into the swing of things it becomes second nature 🙂
