Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm new to this and after sensible people not out to make money off our illness. I've type 2 and all generations of my family have got it. I struggle with the support i get from my local Diabetes Nurse as i'm Autistic. I struggle with the pin prick testing and looking for non invasive method that's simple to use (Think Facebook stuff are scams). I hope to get info on Non Metformin Methods as refused this after being made ill after using this. Thanks for letting me join and joined Diabetes Uk

There are no money making schemes here @Ken Naunton, just lots of positive help and support. If you want to go down the non-metformin route, it will involve cutting down carbs. This includes reducing or cutting out potatoes, bread, rice and pasta along with the more obvious things like biscuits and cakes. There are lots of people here who are happy to answer your questions, so please ask away!
Welcome aboard 🙂

Welcome Ken, what are your dietary plans? Do you need to lose some weight?

Hi and welcome mate. Not medically trained, but my very basic understanding is that I'm not sure that any of the non invasive methods are that accurate, or even work at all? as you need to test the blood glucose levels which involves getting to the blood, so a non invasive method will obviously not do that!
Hope you can find some positives here, lots of very knowledgable people on here.
What was your HbA1c levels when diagnosed?

Sorry to hear about your struggles - it isn't easy trying to engage with people sometimes.

Do you need to test or are you testing more for your own interest.

I am because of you're being asked to test and given your autism you may qualify for a CGM. This is basically a patch that sticks you your arm and once applied is non-invasive.

Annoyingly, given you're T2 and not on insulin you may not be able to get one but with your additional needs your DSN may be able to make a strong case if monitoring BG is required.

Do you have any family or friends who could attend an appointment with you to discuss this. There are patient advocate services as well and that may be something to explore also. This may help get better support from your DSN.

I have no will power plus Medication for Autism makes me hungry. Also is there non metaformin (using say Cinnamon, Ginger and tumeric) methods. I cannot handle metaformin. Food wise it is difficult for me to cook unsupervised.

If you want to avoid having metformin then getting to grips with a suitable dietary regime will help. I'm afraid however much you read about these 'natural products' there is little evidence they actually make any difference.
There are many foods you can have which require no cooking, cooked meats, tinned fish, cheese, salads, coleslaw, full fat dairy, yoghurts or if you can use a microwave then some of the lower carbohydrate ready meals are OK. Having enough protein and healthy fats will help you not to feel hungry.
There are other medications other than metformin if you really need the help of medication.

Hi @Ken Naunton and welcome to the forum - glad you've found us - In terms of the "non-invasive" BG Checkers there is no evidence that any of them work so I wouldn't waste your money on them - if you've been told to test regularly then you should get some help with doing this from your healthcare team - a change of lancing device may help for example - I've just changed mine (after a recommendation on here) and it's much better and less painful than my previous one that I was using for the past 2+ years. Good luck with everything and if you have any questions, just fire away 🙂

I've not been asked to test by doctors. Other than blood pressure. Just looking at methods that avoid pin pricks. All those testers advertised on facebook from so called doctors.

I think Leadinglights is right. Protein and vegetables is a good starting formula.

Here is a link to a food list you may find helpful: Real Meal Food Lists. Choose foods from the green and orange lists you can prepare.

Tip: scroll down and don't worry about the Banting/Keto title. Basic foods are the same whatever the diet.

Quote from Jonno Proudfoot who created the lists:
Print them out as many times as you like, share them with friends, stick them on your fridge, keep one in your wallet. Put them everywhere. They are going to give you back your power.

Thanks I've downloaded it
