Welcome @Shazsmith1964 🙂 There are lots of friendly, helpful people here. Are you anxious about us (don’t be - we’re just like you) or is it the diabetes causing you anxiety?
Thank you for your kind words I have acute anxity the diabetes doesn't help tho sorry for the delay in reply I'm trying to get used to working it all out, it's nice to meet you.

Hi @Shazsmith1964 I am pleased that you have found the forum. there is loads of experience to tap into on here and if you have any difficulties with working out how to use the forum, just ask.

Diabetes is a shock at any age and whatever type of diabetes we have, but each type is manageable. Are there specific concerns that you are able to pinpoint? There will be others here who have been in the same position And who can offer some ideas that may help.

There is also the Learning Zone (a tab at the top of the page or in the menu) which a lot of people have found helpful. Perhaps have a read on there or on earlier posts, by putting a topic in the search.

Thank you that will be useful to know I'm sure I will get the hang of it soon I will sit down and go through it again thank you

Hi and welcome from me too.

A diabetes diagnosis is a bit overwhelming at first but many people here including myself have found that it has actually channeled us towards a healthier way of life, so much as it is also a pain in the backside sometimes, it can also be a positive. I am certainly fitter and healthier than I was for the previous 10 maybe 20 years prior to diagnosis thanks to changing my way of eating to manage the diabetes and being more conscious of looking after my health in general.
Amazingly, I no longer suffer acute and chronic migraines which had been a problem for 20+ years. My joins are much less painful, my skin and asthma is a lot better and my gut/bowel health has improved. Yes I have has had to make some significant changes to my diet which has taken a lot of thought and effort but I still have little treats every day, they are just different to the treats I used to have. Anyway, I hope you too can find a way to improve your health and manage your diabetes well and I am sure the forum members will have plenty of inspiring stories and tips and practical advice from their own experience to help you.

It is however important to know a bit more about you and your diabetes diagnosis....

Have you been prescribed any medication and if so what?
Do you know your HbA1c result.... this is the blood test used to diagnose and monitor your diabetes and will usually be a number in excess of 47, but can go up into 3 figures if things are seriously amiss with your system.
Can you tell us how you came to be diagnosed....Was it via a routine blood test or were you seeing the GP because you were symptomatic and if so which symptoms.... or perhaps it came to light through some other means?
Do you have much/any weight to lose?

Look forward to hearing more from you.

We're do I begin , well I found out I had diabetes type 2 back in 2018 I was given the news that I had it, no matter how hard I tried to get a appointment I wasn't given 1, it was in the November I got diagnosed, it wasn't untill may 2019 that I got to see the diabetic specialist who gave me a injection that I was to do every week, I had to do that injection myself in front of her wich I did so that out of the way I went home couple of hours later I was being sick non stop and just sleeping I was like it for a week, then got booked in with a diabetic who was so helpfull and we get on really well we tried a tablet and at the time it wasn't right for me due to a load of other health problems so I was put on insulin 3 times a day and a tushibo injection at night one of my health issues I don't have a good realshonship with food wich I it self is a problem, I'm 59 and my sleep patten is so messed up I've missed doing my injections and everything has spiraled out of control and it's getting to overwhelming now I'm hopeing that someone can advise me in the right direction my Dr's is nearly impossible to get a appointment my mobility isn't good either, so sorry for the long winded post.

Don't apologise for giving plenty of information although sorry to hear you have been so poorly supported and have got yourself in a muddle. Hopefully we will be able to help you straighten it out a bit.

Firstly can you give us the exact names of the insulins you take?

I am thinking your once a day is possible Tresiba? Is that right? How much do you take of that and when was the last time you injected it? Don't worry if it was quite a while ago or you can't remember but knowing ir it was yesterday or the day before or 3 days or more ago would be useful. The great thing about Tresiba is that you don't have to take it at exactly the same time every day, so it should allow for a certain flexibility with your sleep pattern.

Which insulin do you inject with your meals and how much do you inject and when was the last time you used it... just roughly?

I assume you have a means of testing your levels? Can you test now and tell us what the reading is? Don't worry about being judged if the number is high, because we have all got in a muddle from time to time and getting back into a routine is the important thing, but we need to know where you are now so that we can give appropriate advice..... So if levels are really, really high we might suggest you ring 111 or even go to hospital. But hopefully they will not be too dangerously high and we can help you to get back into a bit of a routine.

Just talking to others with diabetes really helps to know that you are not alone with it and you can get through this rough patch and feel better again.

Hi thank you for your reply the dayly insulin is nova rapied 38 units b4 meals and night time one toujeo I can do that one at anytime in the evening normally before I go to bed my blood sugars are just under 20 there either that or drop to under 5 I am meant to be between 5 and 9 but its so hard to keep them low because of my difficulty with food l was going to speak to my nurse and ask if could be back on the tablets as a lack of sleep and fibro fog I forget I do have a load of other meds I have to take in the morning so might be easier for me.

Ok, well 20 is high but it could be worse. How about starting now and taking your Toujeo right now and then at least that is a good start to taking back control. You will feel a lot better just gently bringing your levels down a bit, slow but steadily. If you are struggling with both insulins, perhaps just get into a routine of taking your Toujeo each evening and test your levels before you do and make a not of them each night. Hopefully you will gradually see a little progress. Maybe keep your Insulin pen on the pillow so you can't forget when you climb into bed or set a regular alarm on your phone to remind you to inject it. We have another member who does that. Her sleep pattern is all over the place but when the alarm goes off, she knows her long acting insulin needs injecting.
Try just to focus on that for a week or two and get into a habit of it and then maybe select one meal when you will find it easiest to take your meal time insulin and just take it one step at a time, nice and slow and steady. Any improvement is better than the current situation i you haven't injected any insulin for a few weeks. So each injection is an achievement and a step towards feeling better. Try not to worry about the targets for now. I found the targets really difficult to achieve and it demoralized me as I was always too high or low and it made me feel like I was failing. Just one small step each day to take your Toujeo is a good start. Can you do that right now?

Thank you so much I've just done my night time one and will do it night by night I see now that the little steps will hopefully lead me back on track I think part of me wanted to give up selfish I know I am so grateful for your advice I will let you know how I get on

Oh! Well done! Thought you might think I was being bossy but sometimes we need just a bit of a nudge in the right direction. So pleased you managed to psych yourself up to do that. Will you come and post each night and let us know how you get on? No pressure if you don't want to but I find having the support of the forum (and a little bit of accountability) helps me to keep going or pick myself up and dust myself off when I go astray and everyone here is really supportive because we all know it is tough and we all have other issues to deal with, not just diabetes, but you can improve things with a bit of support and encouragement.

I too struggle with disordered eating (I binged on chocolate yesterday.... first time I have fallen off the wagon in a while, but back on it again now. Keeping to any sort of routine with my day or sleep is challenging, perhaps a throw back to working rotating shifts for a lot of years, although when I do, it really pays off, so I understand how small steps, one at a time can help you build a better routine.

Hope to hear back from you tomorrow night with a little progress report, but no pressure if you can't manage it. Sending (((HUGS)))

Of course il be here every evening to update you and I guess we all need that push at times I guess I feel a bit embarrassed at my age I should have my self sorted, but I know it's OK to not be OK I have learnt that pride and all that, I think you know what I mean I have also decided that I will speak to my nurse I have been putting that of for a very long time so that's another step in the right direction. Eating disorders are so cruel and can really take hold of your mind I suffered belimia it never leaves you, oh dear chocolate can be a bit like the little devil who won't let you say no I wished I loved it but I'm not a massive fan I think everyone who has diabetes rebels sat some point so don't be hard on your self about it your doing really well I'm hopeing to go shopping later all for healthy foods I'm told to eat fish I've never eaten it as I gag when shopping and pass the fish counter and makes it worse when I see there eyes stareing at Me, I love homemade. Soups I love to cook good old fashion food shame I carnt eat most of it. I'm going to say goodnight and il be back later

Good that you are going to reach out to your nurse. I hope she is the supportive one.
I tend to cook simple traditional meals but I just substitute lower carb veggies for the higher carb stuff. So today I had a corned beef hash fry up but used mashed butternut squash instead of potato along with fried onion and cabbage. Made a well in the middle when it was all cooked and dropped an egg into it to fry. Had it with pickled beetroot and pickled gherkins, bith of which I love and have little-no impact on my levels. It was tasty and filling and easy to cook and I just used ingredients I had that needed using up. Probably wouldn't appeal to many other people.... gherkins are certainly an acquired taste but worked for me.
I am also not keen on fish, although I am OK if it has been cooked for me, particularly in a fancy restaurant but then if I have a choice in a restaurant I usually opt for something I like more. I don't like it with sauces or anything, but I really dislike handling it raw and whilst I know I should eat more of it because it is good for me, the times I buy it, I dread having to "deal with it" and I'm embarrassed to say that occasionally I waste it because I simply can't bring myself to handle it. I now try to only buy things that I like or don't know if I like yet (I don't mind trying new things) rather than foods I know I am not keen on, even though they are good for me. It just makes it an ordeal or a guilt trip and life is hard enough.

Anyway, hope you are getting some sleep and hope to catch up with you tomorrow.

Could try Tuna from a can? Healthy, goes with lots of other foods, easy to store and quick to prepare, no eyes either 🙂

Yeah, thanks, I can manage tuna and salmon from a can and surprisingly sardines sometimes as long as they are not in tomato sauce. Fish and tomato is a shocking combination of flavours!! 😱 Canned fish is a last resort choice for me when almost everything else from the fridge and cupboards is gone.
