Drivers who treat their diabetes with insulin will have greater choice in how they test their glucose levels under new guidelines published today by the DVLA.

The update means drivers can now choose to use flash and continuous glucose monitoring devices to take glucose readings before they drive, or during breaks in driving. Until now, drivers had to check their glucose levels with a finger prick blood reading no more than 2 hours before driving and then again on a break after every 2 hours of driving.

DVLA Chief Executive Julie Lennard said:

We want to make it as safe and as easy as possible for drivers to get on the road. Our panel of medical experts who help set the medical standards for driving are always looking at how we can use advancing technologies, and we’re pleased to be able to offer drivers another way of how they monitor their glucose levels.

About bloomin time.

Personally I would not trust a CGM reading one bit and will continue to test before I drive.

Excellent news.
I shall use my Libre and take account of the time lag and direction of travel to help make decisions about action before driving. For me much more informative than just a BG and happy to use BG if unsure.

Does anyone know if the Miao Miao reeder qualifies as a CGM for purpose of DVLA regs. It has a CE mark which seems to be the only stipulation but I would be surprised if DVLA were happy with that as it’s not recognised medically in the UK???

All this is bollards anyway, because if you don’t test your meter regularly with control solution it could be telling you porkies. And this applies to anyone on the forum who uses a BG meter. It’s not stipulated in the driving regulations, either. The FDA, for example, recommends once a month, or every new pot of strips. Or if you drop your meter.

And RobD, welcome to the forum. The MiaoMiao reader uses the Libre sensor, so it’ll be fine. It gives you the same data.
