Hi, I?ve been diagnosed for the past 10 years but managed on diet and exercise. Over the past four months my BGs began to rise and no longer reacted to exercise or diet. Before 15 minutses on my strider would leave me 2.5 whole points down on my original start level. Now 15 mins striding produces absolutely zero change. After three months of rising at 10.5 and returning home at 11.0 I decided that it was time for meds. My Dr as predicted has me straight on metformin 1000mg; but after week later there was absolutely no change still rising at 10/11 and returning at night 11/12. He told me to adjust as necessary and so I increased 500mg bt still no change. Today I rose at 11 had small breakfast two rashers grilled and one fried egg two cups black coffee and that has been it. Now 16:00 hrs and BGs are showing 11. I thought with going on meds I would be better controlled or am I not giving it enough time.

Ulidian hi and a warm welcome to the forum ,I was initially put on met and the first few days i saw no change really, but after a fortnight I saw a decrese in my levels so give it abit more time its all about being pacient, dont forget meds only do some of the work we also have to give ourself a helping hand to.

Just a wee suggestion maybe a fryed egg is not the best breakfast option maybe swap the fryed bit for scrambled or poached.

Welcome to the forum, Ulidian.

Many people have experience of starting medication, and it often takes more than a week or two to get dose right and see results. However, in the meantime, you're doing the right things with exercise and diet. So, yes, give it a bit more time. 🙂

Thanks

Thanks for the answers - It's Sunday and life just would not be the same without my Bacon and Egg and Paper. The rest of the week I usually have a ham omlete or a very low carb ceral. 🙂

extra

Sorry, I should have said that I use an omlete machine therefore no fat or oil and the ham is that totally lean tasteless paper but it adds to the bulk

Metformin can take 3 weeks to build up into your system to it's full working potential so yes, over over the next couple of weeks you should see some improvements..

Thanks - I suppose I was just annoyed that I had to do meds after so long but that's life I suppose.

It by far means your no failur or anything Uli I felt the exact same way but someone on here just said you need a little bit of an extra hand thats all,i fought it for ages saying i want no meds but caved in and it was the best choice i ever made as it meant i got my blood sugars under control quicker

10 years on diet alone is quite an achievement far from failing...

Metformin also as well as the ability to lower blood glucose, also is beneficial for the CV system, so helps protect the heart, their some who take Metformin just for this side of things..
