Hey all,
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on Monday - and even though I had my suspicions (my dad has it) I'm still reeling a bit. I booked in the blood test as my vision suddenly went blurry and dammit, if it wasn't diabetes! GP was ... Not great (a story for another time). But I'm looking forward to meeting the nurse next week. Anything I should ask them or expect?

Info on me: I've immediately gone on the Mediterranean Diet plan from Diabetes UK - which I am surprised to find I love. I will start building up my exercises next week. My hba1c is 77 and I've been put on 1000mg of Metaformin. So far no side effects (touch wood). My BMI is 27 and my plan / hope is to lose at least 10kg in three months.

Thanks in advance everyone. It's very reassuring to know I'm not going through this alone!

Welcome to the forum! I'm sad that you've needed to find us but glad that you did.

Reeling is a good way to describe the response to a diagnosis (even an expected one).

I'm glad you've found an enjoyable approach to eating - It's a big part of managing our condition I think, working out a way to still enjoy food.

Ask *all* the questions- no such thing as a stupid question here and I hope you find the support here as valuable as I did when arrived here in a state of shock last July.

Hello @Kime , Welcome to the forum! I understand that the diagnosis can feel overwhelming at first, but it sounds like you've already made some big steps, well done!
Feel free to ask any questions you have, we have a lot of supportive members here, and we're all here to support each other, please remember you're not alone in this journey!

Welcome to the forum @Kime

Glad you’ve been enjoying the Mediterranean approach to eating.

Sorry to hear you had an unfortunate experience with your GP. Hopefully you’ll find the nurse more encouraging and supportive.

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations. It’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy. Let us know how yu get on at your appointment, and keep asking questions on the forum 🙂

Hi @Kime I was also diagnosed with Type 2 a few weeks ago and found it pretty hard to deal with. I had to have a surgery for a burst abcess in my leg which appears to have been caused by the diabetes, so when I was still at the hospital recovering from that and feeling not great - the nurse came and gave me insulin and metaformin and then told me to re-dress my wound every day for 6 weeks and then discharged me. I felt very unsupported, especially since I found that my GP had kicked me out and I had to re-register and then complain a lot to get appointments for my wound care. So far the diabetic nurse has only texted me an appointment for 3 months time. But anyway - what I wanted to say was I also completely lost my nearsight vision after the first week on the meds and has taken about 3-4 weeks to completely return to how it was. And in the meantime I had to wear some +1 glasses I bought from Boots. Hope you are coping ok. The aftercare I've experienced so far has been very poor and I've had to complain a lot to get even basic service!

Very similar to me (Dad had it, hba1c of 83, blurred vision developed a few months before diagnosis, and my bmi was about 28)

I made similar dietary changes (I was already doing exercise.) and took 1000mg of Metformin for 3 months until hba1c returned to normal and it was eventually stopped. No side effects.

The nurse will just do standard checks - foot tickling, maybe offer some dietary advice (Sounds like you've already started that) and take various readings such as blood pressure. For my first meeting I'd already lost weight and changed diet and was just told, 'you don't need us.'

Hi @Kime, welcome to the forum and I am sure that you will find plenty of support and advice to make up for the poor performance from your GP. I have really benefited from these forums going from an HbA1c of 86 to 47 in three months based on the advice and suggestions that were provided by many of the above commentators as well as my wife. With the right attitude and support I am sure you will get this condition under control.
