Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, like many I've just moved from pre diabetic to diabetic. At the moment I crave a biscuit or a mince pie but I am trying to resist the temptation. Over the last month my diet has changed, not dramatically just cutting down on carbs and sugars and to that I've lost 5 pounds. Hopefully it will get easier.

Hi and welcome.

Sorry to hear you stepped over the diabetes threshold but hopefully you will manage to push back. It sounds like you have made a good start, so well done with the weight loss. It is a difficult time of year to lose weight for lots of reasons so 5lbs down in a month is a great effort! Save a mince pie for Christmas day and let that be your special treat for being good. I have found that I enjoy a chunk of cheese with a cup of coffee now instead of a biscuit and almost no carbs in cheese.... just don't have any biscuits with it.

It usually takes a few weeks for your tastes to change, but once they do it is much easier to stay off most high carb or sugary things.

If you are just over the threshold for diabetes, then some modest changes to your diet should be sufficient but should still be taken seriously. To curb the hunger then reducing carbs but increasing protein and healthy fats will help.

Keeping your carb intake to less than 130g per day still allows you to have the occasional treat by balancing meal carbs.

Welcome to the forum @theplumb

I think it’s quite natural to miss some of the things you would have once eaten almost without thinking.

I think it’s important to allow yourself some treats every so often. But to be careful that it does remain only every so often!

Well done on the weight loss you have achieved so far. You should feel proud of yourself!

Hello and welcome from me too!

I’m right with you on cravings - my past vice was chocolate, I would even replace a meal with a bar of chocolate and at one point couldn’t have a chocolate-free day! But you can change habits and your tastes, I now very rarely have chocolate as well as other sweet things. It takes time to change habits, but it is do-able. I found that eating something savoury when I craved sweet things helped, so maybe try something like a bit of cheese, a few olives or something like that may help, obviously don’t go wild and have lots, but just tasting a small amount of savoury things may switch off your sweet cravings.

Well done on your weight loss too! That’s a good amount to lose over a month and shows that making small changes can have a big effect and is much more sustainable than making sweeping changes.

When I was young and first tasted an olive, I thought it was foul and wondered if it would be the sort of taste I'd 'grow into' when I was older.

At 72, I no longer expect that might happen. Hence I'm always rather doubtful when others suggest eating olives as snacks!

I used to really dislike olives and wonder why on earth anyone would eat them. Now I absolutely love them and eat them almost every day. Same with blue cheese. Used to detest the stuff but I go through almost a block a week of Blue Stilton. My tastes have changed.

Still really dislike the aftertaste of goat's cheese though.... just can't get away with it!
