Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone,
My story is complex to say the least,.... Several years ago, I was told I was Type2, but diet alone was all that was needed. I shed a LOT of weight, (12stone 3lb in total). My gp was pleased, I was "no longer at risk if needing meds for diabetes, and no longer needed inhaler for asthma....all was great!!! But 2months ago, I had a T.I.A and my blood sugars were very high.... The following day I was started on 500mg metformin, increased to 1000mg 2weeks later. however, my bloods have been all over the place, as low as 3.5 then 18.6 within 2 hours...... Or sudden drops or raises. No pattern, no links to specific foods.... My diet is well controlled and I do as I'm told by diabetic clinic. I'm looking for guidance or answers on WHY!!! why the spikes? Why the shaking? Why blurred vision?.... My gp said high chance of starting on insulin, but can metformin work if I stay on that alone?..... Very confused...... Very disappointed that I "ate myself well" a few years back to now be taking meds after all.

Welcome to the forum Bitsuns. You certainly did well with losing weight. Well done.
I cannot answer all your questions but I am sure someone with the same type do Diabetes will be along soon.

Why blurred vision? - Blurred vision is common when you have high blood glucose. The blood is carrying around a lot of glucose so it causes problems with the small blood vessels in your eyes. This can clear when the BG drops again

Why dizzy? - this can happen with low BG and as yours are going up and down this may well match those the lower values.

Whatever carbohydrates you eat they will elderly very glucose into you blood. It is not as the papers describe that sugar is the only culprit. The potatoes, pasta, root veg, ... Will all get changed to glucose in our small intestines. As we have diabetes we are not able to produce any(T1)/ enough insulin to match the glucose so either tablets or injections are needed.

It might be useful to talk to your diabetes specialist about how to manage the big swings, and maybe keep a note of what you are eating alongside the BG results that you have. Often another pair of eyes can spot patterns that we cannot see.

Hi Bitsuns, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about the problems you are encountering :( Had you had your levels checked at all between being told you weren't at risk and having the TIA? Just wondering about the timescales.

Metformin won't have a huge impact, and it does take time to show any improvement, if improvement is to come from it. How do the blood sugar readings you are taking relate to when you eat, and what are you eating? Do you have any family history of diabetes, of any type? Blurred vision and shaking are both associated with high or swinging blood sugar levels. If your body is now not producing sufficient insulin of its own then metformin will only have marginal effect - do you know if you have been tested for how much insulin you are producing? Tyep 2 diabetes is largely associated with insulin resistance, and weight loss can often help overcome this, so it sounds like this is what happened when you had such great success with the weight loss - that effort is not wasted, you will be much healthier generally having lost so much, so well done there! 🙂 However, it seems that it's possible that your pancreas might now be failing for some reason - not your fault, it can happen. What is your GP doing to help you bring things under control - do you have any more appointments due?

I have more appnts, but currently im keeping low carb diet, and checking blood before I eat , nor.ally 8.5-13.7 and 2hrs after eating im about 19.5 ish...... Getting very tired very quickly too. Itchy, swollen ankles and lots of headaches. I'm confident that it will settle down once im on right meds...... No testing between all clear n TIA (about 6years between). Type 1in family, mother insulin dependant. Thank you for your replies. Much appreciated.
