Hi everyone.

Im a new member and found out this week that I'm type 1 diabetic.

I'm sure there is plenty of posts like this but finding them is a nightmare.

Anyway before I found out i was diabetic I was eatting whatever i wanted. I'm a averaged sided guy with a active job so it's never had been a concern to me. Chocolate and take aways are things I enjoy, I know I need to cut down on them now.

One of my issues is with chocolate though, I don't know of it's something in it, but if I have chocolate one day then not the next it will give me a terrible headache. So I have to have a little bit each day or nothing at all. It's like a withdrawal or something, I get the same with caffeine which I steer clear of.

Has anyone else experieced something like this? And is there anyway to keep that chocolate fix going without putting to much at risk (can't stand dark chocolate though) and can you live and eat pretty much what you like on insulin? Currently iv just started levemir once a day.

Thank you in advace.

Shame you don't like dark choc, cos the higher the amount of cocoa solids in it - the less effect it has on our blood glucose. Milk choc plays complete havoc with it though however much you eat or don't.

However - it is addictive the same as fags, cocaine, coffee and - CARBOHYDRATES. Pack any of them in completely in one fell swoop and yep - you will have withdrawal symptoms. So - wean yourself off some of the worst offenders gradually until you find a comfortabe level you can maintain and live with forever more*.

* you do know by now that this is a marathon - not a sprint?

Welcome to this friendly supportive forum. It must have been a huge shock for you and a worry too. It's very early days for you, so much to take in and everything does get easier. How did you get diagnosed and what are your levels now?
Also if you go to the forum for introduction for new members you will see a post with lots of useful links. You can also write there and you will get lots of support.
There is no reason why you may not eat some chocolate every day, there is a type of insulin (bolus/rapid) which you take before each meal and covers the food you eat. But sounds like you are on just a basal regime for now, this is the background insulin. Do you have a appointment booked to see a medical professional?
There is so much to take in and wishing you good luck with everything.

Just seen you have written, so ignore my post!

Welcome to the forum Scott.
There's a lot to consider and even after more than 20 years of adulthood with type 1 diabetes, I still get things wrong sometimes. But it has got easier.
To concentrate on your specific chocolate withdrawl issue. It sounds like you've given up all other sources of caffeine. So, each day after a chocolate day is a caffeine withdrawl day. You could try to even out caffeine intake eg a small bar of chocolate and cup of regular coffee contain about the same amount of caffeine.

Hi Scott.

I'm not a type 1, but I know that a few of the type one's here can take some chocolate if they make sure they adjust for it with their insulin, I think it's just a case of taking your time and finding out what's best for you. Personally, I hate dark chocolate, but I have gotten to the point now where I can have a Lindor or something every so often to help with the craving if I've had a really good day with the rest of my diet/exercise. It's taken a lot of will power to get to that point though. Don't go cold turkey on everything straight away, ease yourself into it as others have said. Good luck 🙂

EDIT: This thread has a bit of information about what some others eat - https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/chocolate.69216/

I confess I eat chocolate and don’t like dark. Can I suggest trying Hotel Chocolat ‘Supermilk’. It’s 65% cocoa and 15%milk so th sugar is 20%. It’s kind of between milk and dark. 50gms contains 12 gms of sugar. Less than 3 teaspoons. If you have half the 50gm that’s a decent piece. It’s expensive though
