Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have to have an operation for breast cancer in about 10 days time. I have been told that the medication that I will have to take will probably make me put on weight. I have been very fortunate not to have been overweight and I am aware of the adverse effect that it can have on diabetes. I have fought hard over nearly 9 years to not have medication for diabetes and I am hoping that I will not have to start now. I eat a low carbohydrate diet at present and I am wondering what else I could try if I start to put on weight. Any suggestions? TY for reading this post.

I’d say concentrate on the recovery from the upcoming op and then deal with any weight gain.
It does sound like you’re already doing the best you can regarding dietary habits as you’re following a low carb way of eating.

And I hope the op is successful and the recovery simple and as quick as can be.

Hello @happydog and best wishes with your op.
Very well done on controlling your diabetes so long without meds, and hopefully that will stand you in good stead during your recovery.

I have always struggled to keep my weight under control and have found that just following a low carb diet, although brilliant for keeping my blood sugars under control isn't quite enough for weight control. For this I also tend to avoid the saturated fats, e.g cheese. butter, cream, but eat plenty of the healthier fats.

But as @ColinUK says just concentrate on a recovery first without adding additional issues of weight control.

{{{Hugs}}} mate - been a very long time since diabetes on its own killed anyone really - but cancer is a different kettle of fish entirely - as you're very well aware, I know.

Attempt to look at it a bit like you would if you suddenly in your third pregnancy got gestational diabetes - if your BG went high enough and they said You'll need to take insulin - then you would do that, to save harming either the littl'un or yourself wouldn't you? (I hope you would anyway)

Cross any possible bridges when you get to them - and be secure in the knowledge that though the bridge is an upward climb for starters, logic says that you will get to the summit and you'll be back on the flat again afterwards.

Jolly good luck with your journey.

Thank you for your replies. Bit silly to be worrying about putting on weight when facing cancer, I know, but it has taken me a long time to get my BG to an acceptable level (43), (OK could be even better). As I live alone now it is good to make contact with others. I am being positive and will take things as they come. Thank you for helping me get everything back into perspective. I'll deal with the weight when it happens 🙂

Nothing silly about it at all.
Is it perhaps a coping strategy for facing the cancer?
Could it be that because it’s something you can exert control over now it feels like something to hang on to and focus on?

Not that there’s anything wrong with doing that at all I hasten to add. Lord only knows I do things like that myself all the time. If I have something stressful which is largely out of my control I have a tendency to seek control in other aspects of my life.

Best wishes for your recovery following your op @happydog

Hope you are fighting fit in no time, and the impact on your weight is minimal.

Everything crossed for you!
