Hi, just joined, but I've been T1 for 20 years and I'm 32 years old. Here to listen and help in equal measure hopefully. Hope everyone's good even though it's M**day!

Hi Stu, welcome to the forum 🙂 How have things been for you over the years? What insulin regime are you on?

Hi Northerner, thanks for asking

It's generally been good. Spent a year or two in the 9's and 10's while in my teens but my HBA1C is usually around 7 or 8. I've always injected, don't like the idea of being attached to a machine! Been on mixtard, insulitard, actrapid but now on humalog and lantus. I had a little bit of laser about 8 years ago but been ok since. I try to be as positive as I can be about it. Certainly since I became a dad.

How about yourself?

Welcome to the forum, Stu, good to have you on board 🙂.

I'm doing good thanks, Stu. Diagnosed 2008 at the grand old age of 49, so quite different from you. In fact I'm quite different from most T1s - after 4 years on lantus I'd had to reduce the dose so much that I tried without it - still managing without it after another 3.5 years! 😱 Clearly, my beta cells (or some of them!) sprang back into life 🙂 Helps with my control as I have been fortunate to have had HBa1c is the 5% range practically since diagnosis.🙂

Thanks everyone!

Wow, I've never heard of such shenanigans Northerner! My uncle came off metformin after a couple of years but obviously for T2. Did you change your diet or anything?
I'm going the other way atm, since I stopped smoking, my metabolism has slowed a bit and take a wee bit more insulin. I've finally stopped gaining weight though, so it's just the 15kg to shift I'll start after xmas, promise

I've come across a couple of others like me Stu, but we are a bit weird! 🙂 No change in diet or anything, went from 20 units at diagnosis to zero. Still need novorapid with food though, so not cured yet! 🙂

Thankfully, I stopped smoking 21 years ago - best thing you can do for your health, so well done! 🙂

Thanks. The first few days were excruciating but after a week, I felt fine. I put my blood meter away for that week, I didn't want to know lol! I do jigsaws now, weird I know but it helps! I'm squirrelling away the cash to take my girls to Florida, unless my jigsaw addiction becomes as costly......

Hello Stu, and welcome - and well done on stopping smoking 🙂

I am another insulin-sensitive late bloomer, like Northener - diagnosed type 1 at the age of 44. Not quite so sensitive that I've stopped using Lantus altogether though!

Hi Stu,
I'm a fairly newbie here too, everyone here has been so helpful 🙂
I'm a slow-onset type 1, so just started insulin a few weeks ago after being on tablets for 5 years, and this forum has been a great help.
Well done with the quitting smoking - jigsaws are great at anytime!

Hi! And thanks!
Yeah, there isn't a good age to be diagnosed but 11-12 is probably one of the better times imo. Your (or I was) old enough to understand and do most of the testing, adjusting etc yourself but young enough to be able to take it in your stride and get used to it before other pressures and responsibilities in life set in. Possibly......

41 was a good age too (did I just say that?!) - it made me kick some bad habits I was struggling with and start some good habits. :D And it made me realise that my best friend is a most excellent and fantastic and reliable and mega-supportive person! :D Shame she's not going to read this...
