After my dietician appointment this week I’ve agreed to give low carb another go, with her theory being that reducing insulin needs will help weight loss and improve bgs. I’ve not got on with it in the past so I’m really not sold on it but giving it a go starting today

Breakfast: had 2 eggs, scrambled, with one slice of cheese and a coffee (5g carb, no insulin)

BGs wet up to about 13 despite being up and about early at music practice, and stayed there all morning

Lunch: lettuce, onion, avocado, mini sweet peppers, 3 chicken kebab things, 1 apricot. 25g carb, 5u bolus and 2u correction.

Hasn’t had its full action time yet but bg still 12.9

Can’t tell if I’m off to a grumpy start because I know I’ve not got on with low carb in the past, or if I’m right to be grumpy at these bgs? Before you all say “you need to bolus for the protein” I don’t want to try that because the only reason for doing it is to not have to bolus, so bolusing for protein would defeat the whole purpose. Besides, I’m sure bolusing for protein isn’t something that starts from the first low carb meal.

Any thoughts, do I just need to give it more time, will it actually improve in time or am I doomed to 3 months of grumpiness and high bgs until I review progress with the dietician?

Could you do a slightly modified version @Lucyr ? I tried very low carb (ie no countable carbs) and I found I needed to bolus more than I’d have thought because my body was squeezing glucose out of everything. However, if I accompany a very low carb meal with a small amount of ‘proper’ carbs, my blood sugar is much easier to control. That is, I’d eat a low carb meal like green salad plus eggs, nuts, etc, not count the carbs in that at all, but accompany it with a slice of bread/crispbreads/whatever that I did count. I could then bolus just for the bread/whatever and get better, more predictable blood sugars.

I’ll give breakfast another few attempts without carbs as since the aim is to reduce insulin, I feel like I should give it more than one attempt. It’s just frustrating as I feel like carbs are easier to manage than protein.

I had 35g in lunch (had an ice lolly after it) which my bgs were fine with and dropped after, and then 25g of carbs for swimming, so this afternoon ended up being normal carbs rather than low carb.

Will try something lower carb for tea, but still containing some normal carb. It’s probably something on top of corn thins as tired and not that hungry from swimming.
