Welcome to the club no one wants to join.

Someone who knows much more about T2 will be along shortly I'm sure to help you.

Hi Laura, As recently diagnosed, your making a good start with bloods under 10. Have you been out on any meds yet? I take it you must have a test meter of your own that's good. Northerner will be on soon to recommend some reading material. Look at that and keep us informed. Please ask any questions but your making a good start. Al

hi. I am on metformin. one in a morning and two at night. next step gliclazide if can't get numbers under control. not keen on this....
hba1c was 115. next test end of April.
have my own machine to test blood sugars. my morning levels are between 11 & 13. can't seem to get them lower.

Hi Laura, I'm not sure how long ago you were diagnosed but 115 is a high starting number so give yourself and the meds some time to start working because you've a way to drop to get into the 6's. If your next test is end of April, it may only be a couple of months since diagnosis.

My Hba1c was 52 at diagnosis and it took a while to get the morning levels below 8. If you need to lose weight, it will make a tremendous difference as will a walk after meals if you can. Keep a record of the foods that are having the most impact and reduce or eliminate them.

Hope you manage to get there without increasing your medication. Good luck!

Hi Laura - welcome to the forum.

I was diagnosed in December last year - yeah I know - happy blooming Christmas!

You are doing a fantastic job in getting your levels down. Some days my morning test is below 8 and others it is over! My DSN isn't worried as the overall HBa1c is fine. Don't sweat the numbers for the time being. As you are newly diagnosed they will be up and down and all over the place for a few weeks.

I am sure your DSN is just looking for a reduction in your HBa1c for your first review so please don't beat yourself up over the numbers. We type 2's can be funny beggars at times!

Are you doing low carb/high fat? Many of our forum members have found this a great way to lower BG readings.

Let us know if you want any more information.

Hi Laura, when I was diagnosed last august my HbA1c was 127 so welcome to the high club!). i was initially put on the max dose of metformin but this had no effect on me. I have since been put on Gliclizide before breakfast too. My morning levels started to come down but recently they are creeping up again. When do you test in the morning? Things like getting out of bed and walking about and dawn phenomenen (probably spelt wrong!) can have a huge affect on your BG levels.

My before brekky levels have constantly been around 9 or 10. DNS says not to worry as all my other levels are good.

Welcome Laura
What type of numbers are you going to bed on? Is the blood sugar increasing overnight or staying quite stable?

wow! you are all so helpful and friendly. thank you
trying to do low carb and low fat. no refined sugars (the naughty but nice stuff).
initially had finger pick of 26 mid afternoon and now daytime reading below 10. diagnosed 29th Feb.
sometimes my morning reading can be higher than bedtime one. doesn't matter what I have for tea the morning reading still between 11 & 13. struggling to understand why I can get daytime in range but not fasting

It is probably the Dawn Phenomenon, mentioned by Stitch above. This is when your liver starts pumping out extra glucose in a morning just before you wake up, in anticipation of your energy needs for the day ahead. Some people get the rise a bit later, when they get out of bed, (known as the Feet Hit the Floor syndrome.) Either way, it's really annoying and very difficult to counteract. Some people find a high protein low carb snack just before they go to bed helps, or getting up and having something to eat straight way in the morning.
