Hi,

I am brand new to this forum and to diabetes. I need some help or advice...I had gestational diabetes 2 years ago. My bloods sugar levels were well controlled and I had little problems.

I had an HBA1c done a year after my daughter was born and it was normal. I had one done about 2 weeks ago and it's 55. it was the receptionist of my GP who told me that I had diabetes. That's not my issue I got a 'call back' from the GP who basically said not to worry and to come see them sometime soon. My appointment is for next week but I'm freaking out, emotional and scared. I'm over weight and have been losing weight (intentionally) for 2 months over a stone and a half. I'm 33.

I'm just wondering where to go from here and what do people think my GP will say.

Thank you

Welcome.

First I knew things were not right was the GP surgery booking me in to see the 'diabetes nurse'. Then a horrible wait before I saw them. It's good in a way that you know your numbers, which at over 50 hba1c sounds like you have indeed crossed over the threshold into diabetes territory (only just), but it is perhaps only a recent thing; which is good news as the longer it goes undiagnosed the greater the risk of longer term complications.

You are already making some great changes and progress. Losing weight should help your body to function more optimally. Hopefully some diet changes will help to manage your blood sugar. Quite a few here have switched to a low carb diet. It's really helped for me.

Best of luck, PG

Hi Suzmcc...first of all let me reassure you diabetes is a perfectly manageable condition...with the right diet/lifestyle changes & support...so try not to worry too much...with your HbA1c at 55 that does put you in diabetic range...however as already said...just over...unfortunate the receptionist gave you that information rather than waiting for your appointment...where you could have been offered (hopefully) the right advice & assistance...since your appointment is next week..not too much longer to wait...there is a wealth of information available on diabetes...so much so it can be overwhelming...there are several ways type 2 can be managed...diet & exercise only...or with medication...you can discuss this with your GP at your appointment...at the moment your BG (blood Glucose) levels are not too high...I have no doubt you can reduce those fairly swiftly...you have some experience of diabetes...so likely have a good working knowledge of how to manage/control your diabetes already...as demonstrated during your pregnancy...if there are any particular issues you need help with...post those on the forum...there are many experienced type 2's here ready & willing to share their experiences with you...offer some guidance...good luck...keep us updated.

Hello and welcome to the forum Suz. 🙂 You'll soon be au fait with everything now you've found this place. Life saver it is. It's the only thing that keeps me on the straight and soon to be (with any luck) narrow. :D

I'm sure your doctor will put your mind at ease.

Suzmcc - sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It is awful having to wait when you know something is wrong. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic last year after a blood test. I had a letter from the GP asking me to make a routine appointment and had to wait a week. I knew something was wrong with my blood test as I worked for the NHS for 40 years before I retired earlier this year (21 of them for surgeons and anaesthetists) and I knew having a letter two days after the result meant something was not right.

I am surprised the receptionist told you about the diabetes. I hope you have a positive outcome when you are seen next week.

Welcome to the forum, at least they have caught it early which is a good thing and you have a appointment next week, which should get the ball rolling which you have already started to do by loosing weight.

You will probably will have plenty of questions after your appointment, which you can ask about on here.

Hi and welcome to forum. When you go to your appointment, my advice is take a notebook and pen, and write down the questions you have before you go. Take time and don't be rushed, write down the answers and make sure you understand what you are told.

When I was diagnosed, the locum told me about my blood levels etc, but I had to ask "have I got diabetes then"later in the journey my gp, who I hadn't met, was great, giving me information for this site and setting me on the path af all the routine tests I had to have.along with the box of tissues.

This forum is great along with web site info, and people are supportive.well done for your weight loss, and as others have said, ask questions. No question is a daft one, and sometimes one that others don't like to ask. Carol

Hi Suzzmcc & welcome to our friendly forum. Its understandable that you feel scared and emotional & your apprehension of being told you have diabetes can be overwhelming and daunting.

Your HbA1c of 55 unfortunately means you are in the diabetic range - but before you start panicking - don't. Diabetes can be managed so its not the end of the world - with the right diet and exercise regimes bgls (Blood glucose levels) can be controlled - alternatively your GP might want to start you on medication - usually Metformin.

Its entirely up to you if you want to try to manage your diabetes with diet & exercise only for the first thee months - or whether you are happy to agree to take medication - this is something you need to mull over in your mind prior to your appointment with your GP.

If after the first three months when you have another HbAa1c blood test & your level has reduced to lower than 55 then again you will need to decide if you wish to continue with diet & exercise only or if you want to start taking medication then you must discuss this with your GP and be advised by him/her.

Well done on your weight loss Suz - you're going in the right direction & I wish you luck in your endeavour to lose more weight. There is a thread on here called The Weight Loss Group which you may want to join - you will receive lots of support there.

If you have any more concerns or need questions answered then do please ask and we will do our best to help you. Take care x
