Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello All

I’m newly diagnosed type 2 and have been reading the threads, I have already learnt so much from you all.

I’m feeling so much better now I’m on metformin and glicazide and monitoring bs morning (down from 16 to between 5 and 7.5) My HBA1 was 108 Two weeks ago.

I’ve started exercising more and my bs are around 5 after aquarobics, swimming or an hour on treadmill and weights.

I’m struggling knowing how many carbs to eat at meals, any advice is appreciated.

I look forward to getting to ‘know’ you all.

Carb tolerance is such an individual thing the only way to know how much you can handle and also what types you can handle are to test before eating and then again 2 hours after, ideally you don't want to see more than a 3mmol rise post meal

Congratulations on taking the steps to get everything in order 🙂
xx

Hi Bronwen and welcome, fantastic progress so far, well done you! As @Kaylz has said its an individual thing, we are all different. I try not to go over 100 carbs a day but some go much lower and other are fine with more. A key factor for me was the advice that this is a marathon, not a race, whatever you do has to be sustainable or you will get bored or frustrated with it. it took me a few months to work out a range of meals I could play with safely, enjoy eating and not feel too restricted. Keeping a food diary helped me a lot, I tracked my readings against each meal, tweaked, adapted and tried again until I worked it out :D

Thank you both for your advice, I will start a food diary, that’s a good idea and increase my monitoring before and after meals.

As you are taking Gliclazide you'll need to try to balance the effect of that against the carbs you eat. Checking after each meal would be advisable for a while, to make sure you have the amounts right - and the time of day taking the tablet and eating the meals might have some effect.
If you want to try using low carb eating to control your diabetes than it would be advisable to speak to your GP about reducing doses, or at what point you should discontinue the Gliclazide as low carb is a very effective way to lower blood glucose.

Welcome to the forum Bronwen, glad to have you here.

Well done on the progress you have made so far. Diabetes is very individual, and even within the same overall carb intake different people can vary in which particular types of carb suit them.

Keeping notes and spending some time systematically checking your levels to build up a picture of your own reaction to things can be very helpful.

Let us know how you get on 🙂
