Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm new to diabetes and kidney failure, newish to heart failure and an old hand with underactive thyroid. At the moment I'm struggling to keep all the balls in the air. So many instructions, requirements, changes and people to deal with. Im thinking of starting a new filing system. So instead of one file labelled N.H.S. I have 4, one for each ailment. What do you think.? Anyone else juggling ailments?

Hi @Mojosho and welcome to the forum. Don't have the juggling problem but four separate files sounds a good plan to me.

We are from the same era so I'm betting your files are made from cardboard and contain bits of paper. None of this cloud nonsense for us, eh?

Welcome aboard! Similar boat to you, brittle asthmatic with lung damage from a tussle with flu, renal reflux, and hypothyroidism. Chuck in half dead from untreated ear infections and being blind as a bat, and I feel like a walking example of what not to aspire to!

Welcome to the forum @Mojosho . Glad that you have found us but sorry you have needed to.

You are certainly juggling a mix of conditions, and keeping track of it all is important. Rather than files I have a notebook with coloured tabs for each issue. So far I haven’t run out of colours, but it is a good referencing system and helps me make sure that I have kept track of regular check ups.

With regard to your diabetes, T2 is where your body is not able to produce and/or use enough insulin to match the carbohydrates that you are eating, all of which change into glucose once inside you. It is surprising how many carbs are in the ‘good’ foods such as fruit. So it is a case of familiarising yourself with the amounts in each and limiting the portion sizes if you want to eat them.

A good rule of thumb I use when choosing veg to use in a meal is the if they grow
  • In the ground they are high carb (potatoes, swedes, ...)
  • Above the ground they are medium carbs ( peas, beans ...)
  • On the ground they are low carbs (lettuce, celery, .. )
I find this useful in deciding on portion sizes or swaps to make to match my meals to a carb count that we want. Becoming familiar with the carb content of what you normally eat enables you to then reduce these to enable your body to cope with the amount of glucose in your blood.

Appropriate reductions in carbs has helped others head off a full diagnosis of Diabetes and also improved their overall health.

Do come back with any questions.

Absolutely! I enjoy technology but I used to do book keeping in a big green leather bound ledger using a fountain pen! I still have a love of paper and proper pens. Right, first task is sort out 4 files. I have a renal phone appointment next Wednesday so I need paper work in order. Not sure how she will examine the kidneys down the line! And a list of questions. Here goes!

Lots of help thanks.
g.p. did at last diagnosis say something like I know you have a good diet but you will need to change it. Everything so slow! Is TSH 5.1 anything to do with it? Also Free T4 19.1?

Excellent, I use a Mont Blanc and a spiral bound note book for my blood glucose readings and any D related notes.

The TSH. and freeT4 are both to do with the thyroid, not the pancreas :D

What a mix of ailments! You sound very unique to me. That all sounds complicated to manage. But I hear some humour there. People say I always seem cheerful but being miserable pushes people away while being happy draws them to you. I don't see anyone much as I'm clinically vulnerable but do a lot of texting, emailing, phoning and zooming.

Hello @Mojosho and welcome to our forum.
A cheerful disposition and a good sense of humour, are some of the best things to have in helping to deal with the ups and downs that life throws at us.
Look forward to your postings and hearing how it goes for you.

I think my family have some more colourful words than unique :D

I like a bit of self mockery and snark, whining is not productive imo, plus it’s good to laugh, even if it is at yourself!

Hello @Mojosho and welcome to the forum. 🙂

I don't have kidneys, I have liver instead but I'm with you on the others. :D

Welcome and happy birthday from me too! .... well spotted Martin!

Welcome to the Forum. I am sorry to hear you have so many medical problems. A friend of mine has numerous medical problems including diabetes and they are juggling his medication all the time. It is very difficult.

This Forum, in my view, is very supportive and I hope you find it so.
