Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello! I am a type 2 since 32 years, on Metformin, vildagliptin and Lantus inj. since the last 10 years. Is it safe to try the 5:2 diet, as this would need me to stop all medications?

We really can't advise you about stopping medication, that should be something done only after consulting your HCPs, whoever is prescribing for you.
Do you usually eat a low carb diet and monitor your post meal levels?

Hi. I'm very conscious of my BG'S and have had very few DM related problems in the past 32 years (64 now!🙂).These were mild symptoms of gastritis, suspected to be gastroperesis, and rare episodes of BG's over 300mg%. My fastings are 100 - 130mg% & pp's below 180mg%. I have the regular visits & tests with my endocrinologist & physician. However, they are not sure of the 5:2 diet in long-standing diabetics. I lost 15kg 12 years ago, and have maintained a normal BMI since.

Hi and welcome.
I assume you are in the USA from your terminology and readings.
Just wondering if you were ever tested for LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults)?
The fact that you lost so much weight so long ago and have maintained a normal BMI since but still needing so much diabetes medication makes me wonder if you might actually be a slow onset Type 1. Did they ever do a C-peptide test to see how much insulin you are producing?
Do you follow a low carb way of eating or just eat normally?

Why would following the 5:2 diet mean you need to stop all medication? It might result in you not needing medication at some point if it is successful but I am not sure that it would be a good idea to stop your medication before you start the diet, particularly if you are using insulin. You would need to monitor your Blood Glucose closely and reduce your insulin dose as necessary during the process.
Out of curiosity what dose of Lantus do you use?

Hi!
Thank you for the detailed reply. I live in Bangalore, India. Yes, I have undergone all the mentioned tests, and eventually diagnosed as Type 2. My A1c was 6.5, 6 weeks ago. I take 30 units of Lantus at bedtime. I choose the timing of the carb. intake, and generally follow a low-carb diet
I would like to try the 5:2 diet more for fitness,& perhaps, to get off insulin.

Hi Nelvagal, Any dietary change which reduces your Blood Glucose (be it just cutting down on carbohydrates, cutting calories or fasting) needs close monitoring for anybody on Insulin or medication which directly reduces glucose so not Metformin.
The reason for this is that if the dietary change puts you glucose down into a more normal range, then the current dose of medication may be sufficient to cause a hypo - which can be dangerous.
But if you are already counting carbs and on a variable does of Insulin, then at least you have a BG meter and so can adjust your doses to match your new needs.
