Hiya my uncle was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 yrs ago. He recently went into a hypo and is now insulin based. He is hugely overweight and housebound. He got out of hospital last week with a diet sheet that he has been told to stick to. My main concern is that he has always drank 4 litres of diet coke per day. He insists that the doctors/nurses say this intake is okay. My knowledge of diabetes is limited. So any advice u can offer would be greatly appreciated.

4 litres of coke a day is probably way too much. A recent news report suggests the right ammount was one 330ml can a fortnight is sufficient. (I missed the report I was told about it later).

Coke is quite addictive for many people so it will be tough trying to persaude anyone to even reduce the ammount they drink. I am one who has to limit the ammount I drink each day, even when I am at work with other things to do.

Is it possible for you or someone in the family to talk to your uncles doctor and express concerns and ask for help? I hope a solution and help is found.

Hi and welcome.............

Thats a lot of fizz pop to be drinking, but if its diet/sugar free it wont be effecting his blood sugar.......

Hi Dolly
And a warm welcome to the forum, also admiration as your obviously concerned about your uncle,I can say I drink about the same amount but in water as your uncle does with diet coke, I cant see any concern regarding bs as its sugar free but as Katie said health wise im sure it will be doing something to him as he is drinking such a large amount, does he not find he is bloated or always gassy?

I'm hoping it's sugar free cola!

It's a lot of caffeine, plenty enough to affect his sleeping, and 4 litres is a lot of fluid intake, suggesting that he is drinking to relieve thirst from high blood sugar levels.
