Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi i was diagnosed with type 2 in Feb 2015. My glucose level was 14.5. i had 3 month reviews and blood tests with levels reducing each time. Just had my yearly review and my glucose level is now 7.2. My diabetic nurse then said I didn't need any more reviews until Feb 2017 unless I felt i needed to go back to see her or doctor. I am a bit concerned at what i feel as just being left to it for a year. I feel no different now at 7.2 than i did when levels were 9.5. Just wondered how everyone else is doing with regards to reviews and if this is 'normal' to go to yearly reviews if you get below 7.5( as i was told)

Hi Marie and well done on getting your levels down so well! 🙂

I was diagnosed last Feb. Was given no info on 'reviews' or access to a Diabetic Nurse. My Hba1c was checked at 3 months and I was asked to see a nurse in the practice after 7 months which presumably was a 'review'. I can only assume that I'm being done yearly because that was 5 months ago. It could be because I was down to 5.9 by then (41). I'm also interested in what standard practice is. My review was quite pleasant. She just told me that I seemed to know what I was doing and to get on with it and they'd supply what was necessary. Does sound like others have a more stressful time with certain medics.

I've just realised it's the anniversary of my diagnosis tomorrow!

Do you self test Marie? I understand your concern if the Hba1c test is the only way you can get information on how you're doing.

Hi Marie, I was diagnosed last Augaust, when I was diagnosed I was told for the first year I would see them every 3 months for a review and a repeat of the HbA1c test, august - first test and diagnosed, december - 2nd test, just had my 3rd february and next one will be may. They said to me after that as long as my levels were ok they will be going to once a year reviews. But my dr has told me if I have questions about anything do not hesitate to go back sooner. Hope that helps.

I was first diagnosed almost 6 years ago, after diagnosis I had a HbA1c tested at 3 months, this was a vast improvement so I was only seen yearly from then. Now that I'm on insulin, I'm seen more frequently, but I only started injecting a few months ago.
You must be doing so well Marie that they don't need to keep testing you!
Yearly reviews seem to be pretty standard when you're stable.
Well done you for reducing your HbA1c so much, you're obviously doing the right things 🙂

I'm T2, metformin, not injecting. I saw the nurse at going on 2 months in. Then HbA1c and nurse at almost 3 months, then, 6 month, 6 month again, wasn't told when to do the next, then set at 3 months (to come). Three weeks ago I started physio, and the nurse said we'd see how I was doing after that.

I am type 2 as well, normally its an annual review check up and tests. If you feel you are not happy the way things are going you don't have to wait until the annual review check up time. For the past few years I have never gone a whole year without seeing a diabetic nurse or doctor, more like every month or every other month I see some one, as things not going right.

I get reviews every 9 months, but again can ring up my DSN with any concerns. It does bring it home to you how much this condition is about self management. I think that is partly why, for me, having a meter was very useful (when I was originally wrongly diagnosed Type 2, obviously essential now) as it gave me some immediate feedback and enabled me to keep on top of things and not rely on an Hba1c result in 6 months or a years time. If I hadn't got my meter, I agree, i woulnt know if my levels were creeping back up and a year is a long time to go to find you do need a change in medication/diet etc
