Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi i'm not knew to diabetes but i am new to the site. I joined a couple of weeks ago i asked for advice because my BG is high and i'm feeling very unwell with it. I was advised to go to A&E which i did and to be honest i was made to feel i shouldn't be there i was told i should have gone to my gp. They did tend to me and kept me on a drip over night. The following morning although my BG was still high i was told to go home and arrange to see my GP. I saw my GP and he wants me to increase my insulin and see him in a week. I'm on 80 units and have to increase it by 8 units, i use lantus insulin which i take once a day (i was told that particular works for 24 hrs). I just want to know your thoughts and advice because i'm already on a high dose already and my levels aren't lowering.

Hi and welcome. I’m not on insulin so can’t advise but I’m sure one of the others will. What an awful experience for you, I’m sorry they had such a bad attitude, if only we were able to see our GP as easily as we sometimes need to 🙄

Thank you it's much appreciated x

What are your blood glucose levels? Are you taking note of your carb intake or carb counting?

This evening before i ate it was 22.3. It hasn't been lower than 20 for more than month now. My doctor asked me to record my levels 3 times a day before i ate for 3 weeks but it ended up being 4 weeks because he was away

Can you ask for a referral to a diabetic specialist? Being over 20 for so long is way above target levels and the GP isn’t giving you adequate information or treatment.

I didn't know i could do that but yes i see him on Tuesday and will definitely ask. Thank you

Also do you have a way to check ketones? With blood glucose of that level it’s something that needs keeping an eye on.

What sort of things are you eating? My BG would be in the 20s if I was eating bread/toast or other starchy foods (pasta/potatoes/crisps etc) 2 or 3 times a day. Lowering your carbohydrate intake will help to bring your BG down.

Hi @Mand56 I think the hospital treated you appallingly, your levels are way to high. Forget the Doc DSN is your next port of call, please tell them how you feel, hopefully you have a direct phone number to the hospital Diabetic team.

I have been on a carb free diet. It's very rare i have carbs because i have a lot other health problems. This is why i'm so confused. Also when i spoke to the GP today and explained that i have a carb free diet. He said that anyone could be on a healthy diet and still experience hi BG.

Good morning @Mand56, having levels in the 20s on a carb free diet needs further investigation as this is not healthy. I think You have said that you have an appointment on Tuesday and at present the support you are getting at the GP Practice is not enabling you to manage your levels.

For whatever reason you do not have sufficient insulin in your system to enable you to reduce your glucose levels. This could be because
- you are actually T1 and not producing insulin any more. A blood test would determine this.
- you are T2 and they have not got the dose correct.
Either way this needs addressing and I would ask for an urgent referral to a specialist. In A&E they are dealing with the emergency but the specialist Diabetes team will deal with your on going high BG levels.

I am sorry but I cannot remember whether you had a GAD antibody test or C-Peptide test done before. These would show whether you are actually T1. I was fortunate that in spite of my age my GP did this test and my T1 was picked up quickly. I hope that you get the help that you need soon.

Hi and thank you for advice. To my knowledge i haven't had a GAD antibody test or a C peptide test. But from the word go i was started on metformin and glicazide but neither brought my levels down. The insulin only started bringing it down once i hit 80 units, now even that amount won't bring it down. I was told that i couldn't be type 1 because it was children that get type one adults get type 2.

I must have been a 63 year old child when I was diagnosed.o_O:D

i thought i knew about diabetes but i obviously have more to learn. So do i ask for GAD antibody or C peptide test then? I've mentioned i have a lot of other health problems. The reason they found it was because i had a kidney infection and sent a sample in to double check thats how i they found i was a diabetic

Hello and welcome to the forum. I think it's appalling the way you have been treated. 😡

I agree with the others. If you are eating a very low carb diet and still have such high levels then you need the assistance of your diabetic team to deal with it. Get in touch with them pronto and explain the situation..

Hi, thank you for your response. With my other health problems I've been taken to hospital quite a lot. They always say if you need to come back then don't hesitate. I'm truly hope i don't have to come back with this issue
