Type 2
I have had diabetes type 2 since November 2015. It took a while to sink in and my levels are between 14-28. Im on Metformin and now been prescribed Gliclazide which im anxious about taking as i dont like taking medication.

Hello Robert, welcome to the forum. It is perfectly understandable to feel anxious about medication, and hopefully you have come to the right place to ease some of those anxieties. Many members here are taking Metformin and/or Gliclazide so can provide you with some insight on those meds. Sounds like you are testing your levels with a BG monitor? Have you had much support from anyone in regards to checking readings and monitoring what foods may cause your levels to rise?
Glad you've joined after whats sounds like a difficult start. There is a wealth of knowledge and support on here, so please do feel free to ask as many questions as you like.

Welcome to the forum Robert, from a fellow T2

Welcome to the forum.🙂 I chose to control my diabetes by diet & exercise as I wanted to see if I could manage without meds & have managed very well. Not everyone can though, & you shouldn't see meds as a failure. Some of us need that extra bit of help. You don't say whether you are following a low carb diet, but if you are not, then trying this can lower your blood sugars & you may be able to come off the meds eventually.🙂

Hi and welcome. Those levels are rather high and you need to reduce them in order to avoid possible complications later in life. Many members will advise you to try eating low carb foods to help reduce these numbers but you need medication also to help you. I have been on both these medications but eventually have had to go on insulin therapy as my blood glucose levels started to rise again to the 20's and 30's. So Robert, I would advise you to take the medication and use them and a low carb diet to help reduce your levels to nearer the normal range and who knows you may even be successful in maintaining such levels that you can reduce or negate the need for oral medications. Good luck, Dave

Hi Robert, Ive been on gliclizide (as well as metformin and empagliflozin) for a while now and it helped bring me levels down a bit. Hopefully your gp also gave you a blood testing kit as gliclizide can cause hypos and you will need to keep an eye out for these. Its not a failure being on medication some people just need that extra help. Even being on 3 different tablets my levels are still not where I want them to be. 14-28 are high levels so I hope that the gliclizide will help get your levels where they should be.

Hello Robert
I don't take any medication, just use low carb eating to control my blood glucose and keep it in the normal range. It is a very powerful tool though and you really do have to be very careful as you are on a glucose lowering medication so could have hypos.

Hi Robert, welcome to the group.....

As mentioned, many of us are controlled by Diet & Exercise alone, myself I was started on meds & when I got better control I had to take myself off of Glyburide due to getting too many hypo's.D can be controlled without meds but while your levels are so high then you do need that extra help.
