Hi i was put on Metformin a month ago and hasnt agreed with me at all , they now are changing my medication to Gliclazide , i still dont have to test my blood sugar but if changing meds do i need to be testing my Blood sugar ? , im also on Apxiaban, statin , omeprazole ,

If on gliclizide you should be given a test kit as it can cause hypos, especially if you drive. You will need to test before driving.

Thanks they changing it tomorrow as Metformin not agreeing with me at all , i have to see doctor on thursday so will ask them about testing

As stitch says with gliclazide you will need a test kit and test strips on repeat prescription and if you drive you have to test before driving and at intervals during the driving period (like every 2 hours). The GP practice these days will generally provide a meter (free) as you are on hypo inducing meds, I found it's worth having two meters one perm in the house and one I carry with me as it's always in my coat pocket and automatically gets transferred to the coat I wear. The docs should have no problem with this and generally even the meter supplies will give you a couple free.

i do drive and will be contacting doctors in morning about test kit and strips , thank you everyone for advice

Hi. Were you on Metformin SR - the Slow Release version which is much kinder? Gliclazide works in a different way from Metformin.

Don't forget to let the DVLA know that you are taking insulin. It is law that you tell them.

insulin ?? Sorry it's still all new to me been diagnosed since Feb and on Meds since may 5th . Will inform DVLA and insurance though did say to insurance I was diagnosed diabetic they said didn't need to know mm strangeo_O

Hi Debbie. Some of us can't tolerate Metformin because of the side effects, this happened to me and I became housebound because of them. My GP switched that to Sukkarto SR (Slow release) its a kinder form of Metformin. I haven't needed to inform DVLA because it's not insulin.

For good measure it's best for you to ask your GP for a full meter kit which includes a meter, lancets, lancet device and test strips, all provided in a zipped kit pouch. If you come across any problems regarding this then please do come back to us.

We test our blood glucose levels (bgls) daily:-
Upon waking : pre meals and 2hrs post meals.
It is the best way to find out which foods spike our glucose levels and which food we can tolerate. We find it is the best way to manage our Diabetes. If you have any further queries then do please let us know & someone will come along to answer them for you, take care x

DVLA and insurance aren't bothered about a diagnosis of diabetes, but DVLA needs to be told if you start on medications that carry risk of hypoglycaemia eg glicazide, insulin etc. Usually insurance company just wants to know that you've informed DVLA. Plus you need to know when to test blood sugar and always have quick acting sugary food and drink in your car.

pav your link was pasted incorrectly, it should be: http://www.bedfordshirediabetes.org.uk/downloads/Updates 2014/Driving_leaflet-v3[1].pdf
It's covered in this sites sponsor's page: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Life-with-diabetes/Driving/
You should only have to tell the DVLA if your medical team (GP) tells you that you should. Mandatory notification is if you are put on insulin. It is wise however to tell your insurer. The above apply to normal car drivers, if you drive a bus, lorry etc then different rules apply.

The definitive answer is of course on the DVLA pages and their leaflet is here:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa...ed-by-non-insulin-medication-diet-or-both.pdf
If you do have at any time to fill in the DVLA DIAB1 form then take great care over your answers.

Good luck with the Gliclizide.
