Hello, I am 57 years, type 2 diabetic since 2013, my last sugar hba1c was 61, I am just wondering if you could suggest breakfast, lunch,dinner menus for me as I believe I am not eating enough, I dont have big appetite, I am not a big eater of sweets etc, maybe bar of milk chocolate but it's impossible to get sugar FREE ,there are no added sugar but that wont do as there is sugar in the no added sugar ones. Any suggestions please, I am on 3 x Metaformin a day and 1x Forixga, I admit I dont sleep well at night and sometimes miss a breakfast unless I have it at 6am. I am presently eating porridge with low fat yoghurt. Can you tell me how do I judge the sugar content, portion etc as I am definitely doing something wrong. I cant excercise much due to having leg lymphodema, but I go on short walks. I need to get motivated more and appreciate any support, advice. Thank you in advance. All suggestions very welcome.

It isn't just sugar you want to avoid/limit, its total carbohydrates you need to watch as all carbohydrates turn to glucose, so you may need to reduce your portion sizes or even leave out starchy carbs like porridge, bread, potatoes, pasta/rice etc and up your intake of lower carb stuff, interestingly low fat usually contains more sugar than full fat so you'd need to check the nutrition table on the back of things to see if this is the case with your products

The only way to know how many carbs your consuming is to weigh your food and use the nutrition table to find out what's in the size of the portion your having, it can be a pain but seen as I need to do it so I know how much insulin to take I've been doing it daily for 3 years now

As was said above, Type 2 Diabetes isn't just about sugar it is about Carbohydrates.
Unfortunately the health advice has been encouraging people to eat more and more carbs, fruit juice and fruit all of which are not good for a pre-diabetic or a Type 2.
Strangely the health advice for both Type2 and for Obesity was actually good (cut down on carbs and eat more meat, fish, eggs, cheese) until the 1960's. Only then did they seem determined to get the whole population overweight and with at least pre-diabetes.

It is an accepted medical fact that a high carb intake increases Insulin and that Insulin both promotes the storage of body fat and at the same time prevents the 'burning' of body fat to fuel the body.
So the logical conclusion is that it is impossible to lose weight while one has high Insulin - but for some reason the medical establishment reject this last link in the chain, because they have invested their reputations and lots of time in promoting the unproven idea that eating Fat makes you Fat !
 
The carbohydrate of your low fat yoghurt will be on the pot - but do swap it for something low carb, with the natural fat still in it.
The porridge, if you weigh the oats dry then about 2/3rds of that weight is starch - carbohydrate - so probably best avoided. The actual figure should be on the box.
Personally I eat just twice a day and not very much according to most people, but I eat nourishing foods, salad with meat, fish or other seafood, eggs or cheese first thing, stir fries of low carb veges along with meat or fish for supper, and a mug of good coffee with cream twice a day.
This way of eating seems to reduce fat even when weight is not going down. so that even with my weight being about the same I have changed from being ( ) to a more ) ( shape in the years since diagnosis.
 
I agree with the other posts about Carbs being important rather than just Sugar; blame the NHS/PHE/EU etc for not understanding the basics of nutrition. Fat is not a problem so don't buy low-fat food as a choice. Keep the carbs down but have enough fats and proteins as well as veg & non-tropical fruit to keep you feeling full. Have eggs and bacon for breakfast if you have time rather than porridge.
