Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Right as i am heading to the age of 18 and everything starts to get complicated i need to know what i'm exempt from.
I have the certificate already but what am i exempt from?
do i get free dental treatment, are all my prescriptions non diabetic related free?
i need to know about the dental treatment as i have to go back in a month for a check up and i dunno whether i'm going to have to pay :/
thanks guys 🙂

If you are on medication for your diabetes then all your prescriptions are free, even for medication not related to the diabetes. I think that you will have to pay for dental work though (not sure, as I've always had to pay and have a chequered history with dentists!).

Hope you have a nice celebration planned! 🙂 One thing you might want to make absolutely clear if you plan on having a drink is that it would be very dangerous to spike your drinks. I've had that happen to me on a couple of celebrations and it's not nice, but even worse with diabetes, so take care 🙂

Sadly - unless you are on certain state benefits - you do have to pay for dental treatment. Even when you are both an 'old age pensioner' like me, and diabetic to boot. It's entirely batty since 99.9% of my trouble in the mouth is gum disease caused by guess what? - diabetes ......

Same here Trophy. Silly isn't it?:(

Post-18 benefits depend largely on your educational status.

With diabetes, ALL prescription items on the NHS are free of charge, regardless of if they are related to your diabetes or not. The exception to this is anything on a private prescription. For instance, my anti-malarial tablets for when I went to India were prescribed by my NHS doctor but had to be done under a private prescription, and so I had to pay for these.

Dental care is free for under-19s in full-time education. If you're not in full time education, the situation gets more complicated depending on if you are claiming any benefits. Check http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1786.aspx?CategoryID=74&SubCategoryID=742 for further info.

Otherwise, dental treatment is not free. However, if you use an NHS dentist, you will pay an NHS rate, which is massively cheaper than going private. A standard check-up is ?17.50, if you need a filling or minor treatments, it's ?48, and then if it's anything more complicated then it's ?209. Bearing in mind some private dentists charge ?100 just for a check-up, the NHS is still a very good deal. Of course, the very best deal is toothpaste and good diabetes control - this is a lot cheaper in the long-run!

went to the dentist and i have been put on antibiotics, but like i said i have to go back next month but next month i'm 18, so do you reckon as the treatment was before i was 18 that means if i need more treatment then i won't have to pay for it as it is on going treatment.

Also i have planned to have a party, parents have hired someone and the only people who are coming are the onees i've invited plus there are security people on the door so unless a friend turns on me lol i shan't be getting spiked, also i don't like drinking and shall only be having a few so i shan't be worried about my levels go haywire so to speak! 🙂

I think the antibiotics should still be free (as it's a prescription). As for whether you'll be charged for your next visit....not sure. If it's 'ongoing' (ie. you definitely require a second visit for the same issue) it may still count as under-18 treatment. But anticipate being charged, just in case.
