Natural Yogurt

To be honest I am not sure I could buy natural yoghurt and strain it or even the milk to make enough yoghurt for the cost of the 1kg tub of Greek style yoghurt from Lidl. It really is good value and tastes delicious.

@rebrascora I mentioned the vanilla one as @harbottle mentioned adding vanilla essence and I had not previously seen a large pot of yoghurt with vanilla, given the timing I thought it was a coincidence. Pre diabetes i would sometimes buy a pot of vanilla but they were very small and overpriced. I had seatrout and a green salad for breakfast as it needs eating up. I have a cataract op on Thursday and have decided to stay in the city for a few days in case there are complications adding on Sunday night at the hotel as my Monday Spanish class is a few minutes walk away and it seemed pointless going home Sunday and having to get bus back early Monday. I've had yoghurt this week with blackberries blueberries and tomorrow strawberries. I aim to have it day after op but may have a rare fry up,on Saturday.
I have become an avid reader of nutrition labels!

@saffron15 Good luck with the cataract op and hope you enjoy your stay in the hotel. I would definitely be taking advantage of a full English breakfast if I was staying over somewhere. Such a treat and very low carb if you avoid the hash browns and beans and toast.

@rebrascora thank you. It's a premier inn. Breakfast is extra but there is a lovely small cafe in a 16th century buildingva few minutes walk away where you can order each item individually. Provided no complications I am looking forward to it. I have had a cold for 5 weeks so hope I don't cough! It is getting better slowly. It's only a head cold but basically a snot fest. My GP checked me last week. I'm a little on edge as a new type 2 as instead of steroid drops which I've had before as I have an autoimmune condition I am on oral steroids with orders to keep an eye on BG eg test.
Thanks for the good wishes.

I like full fat Greek yogurt on its own and sometimes with blueberries.
I get the low fat Greek yogurt for the family, yuk.
This yogurt is Greek style and not the same as proper greek yogurt, which is a different taste and lovely with honey.

Natural yogurt, I feel is not filling enough for me awe use it with mint and green chillies blanched to make yogurt raita which is good on kebabs etc. .

You can get creamy full fat Greek style yoghurt which is just as good as authentic Greek yoghurt but less air miles. The only difference is that Greek yoghurt is made with Greek milk, whereas the Lidl Greek Style yoghurt is the same process but made from British milk. It comes in low fat and creamy versions. I only ever buy the creamy one. It is yummy and a 1kg pot lasts me a week of breakfasts.

Hi Barbara, how did your cataract operation go? Hope you are fully recovered.
I make my own plain full fat yoghurt. I use a good plain live culture yoghurt as a starter. About 3 tablespoons, then add a litre carton of full fat UHT milk. Goes into the yoghurt maker and 9 hours later it's ready. Nice and creamy and fairly thick, but I can strain it to make it even thicker. Hubby uses the whey in his bread mixes.

@silver minion I was the one who had the cataract op not Barbara. I was stressed leading up to it as a new diabetic. ( I was referred in March before I knew I was diabetic) I had a cold and was worried it would be cancelled _ Ive had it now for 6 weeks, then I was given oral steroids, the op was at the hospital as I have uveitis and stuck down pupils. I expected steroid eye drops but steroids were a surprise and elevated my blood pressure and glucose. The op was a great experience the surgeon did a running commentary for the students and even spoke to me. It wasn't painful and I didn't use
painkillers. Sadly on Tuesday I was told uveitis had flared. Last time was almost two years ago so I am using drops every hour. This morning I enjoyed my yoghurt blueberry and walnuts before walking to surgery for jabs. My BG was fine too. The stress has almost lifted!

Sorry @saffron15 and @rebrascora I misread the post. I am glad it all went well although the news about the uveitis is not so good. I tend to have yoghurt for dessert in the winter as I like a hot breakfast this time of year. The blueberries and walnuts combo sounds yummy.

@silver minion all the consultants talked about when the uveitis would flare. Hopefully it will clear by end of drops you reduce weekly to just one drop a day after 8 weeks. I want second cataract done. My eyesight isn't badly affected but cataract plus pupil stuck down means they cannot see the back of my eye which given my recent diagnosis is important.
I had started eating porridge first thing but need to test properly. I've always thought of it as healthy as I make it with water and just add a dash of milk. As kids mum used to put Bmax on it. However I realise it spikes badly for some people.

Greek yoghurt years ago was very tangy for the simple reason it was made (they said) with sheeps milk - though I long said I'd never seen any sheep in Greece, whereas you commonly saw goats, sometimes whole herds of em.

Nowhere near that tangy made with cows milk, especially Greek style wherever in more northern Europe you happen to buy it!
