Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi I've asked about ketones before, I'm type 1 diabetic on levirmir & novorapid, my blood sugar control is OK, not many highs, I eat carbs in meals, but not over eating, I have at last contacted my consultant about this subject and he has no solution he can offer. I get low to moderate ketones each day have lost weight which I didn't intend to do, I eat breakfast, lunch and evening meal, my puzzle is I am with ketones most of the time, I wake up some mornings with 0.6 to 0.9, and they rise higher after lunch, which I find strange as consultant does, I take my insulin and eat carbs, I have tried not to worry, but this does not seem right, its like I'm on a keto diet, which I'm not, can anyone please advise, I have asked before but now consultant says he doesn't know, worries me, this started a few months back, and I don't feel great, I'm eating more than I ever have to try and stop it, but can't, and am spending loads on ketone blood testing strips. This is ruining my life as Al I'm doing is testing and drinking water, please help I don't know what else to do.

Could it be related to your Covid infection? Could the virus somehow be persisting eg Long Covid? That might explain why you’re feeling rough as well.

When you say you’re eating ok, are you eating enough and enough carbs?

Have you had some basic blood tests to check there’s not something unrelated to diabetes or Covid going on eg poor digestion or some kind of inflammation or infection somewhere?

It might have been removed because it seems to have gone a bit wonky. In trying to copy and paste your post from the .co.uk. site, you seem to have posted a lot of messages from your account there, and your actual post, the bit in the blue box at the bottom, has got a bit lost. Maybe one of the Mods could tidy it up for you. I’m sorry, I can’t add anything to the answers you got on your thread here.
You say you’ve seen your consultant, and he doesn’t have any answers for you, but did he think it was a cause for concern? And if so, what is he going to do about it? If he was concerned, you may need to badger him for some answers.

Sorry @Annette Arundell but I moved it into "quarantine" until we figured out what had gone "wonky" with your post.

I have now edited it to make it more clear. Let me know if you are not happy with what I have done!

Sorry about that @Annette Arundell , your first post came across with lots of extra code fom the other forum where you posted it initially.

We've cleaned it up now 🙂

With unintended weight loss have you consulted your GP, about the weight loss?

And are you in the UK? Do adults not get ketone strips on prescription? In which case they should be free and if you don’t get them on prescription ask your consultant to add them to your repeat prescription because accurate testing is really important for the safety of diabetics.
I would see the GP about the weight loss and to get some blood tests to see if you have an underlying infection as the combination of weight loss and ketones suggests there’s something going on. I hope you get some answers.

are you sure your glucose meter is actually working correctly and that your sugars are not quite a bit higher than they appear to be

I'm in UK, I get 20 strips a month on prescription, so I buy the rest I need, I rang surgery you don't get to speak to a doctor, I spoke to health care practitioner, he then talks to doc and rings back, I was told to contact my diabetes consultant, spoke on phone as no face to face appointments due to covid, he didn't know why I had ketones, and sent to doctors to give me oprazomol for antacid, as I do suffer with that, thats how the NHS is now. So no more answers to come, I begin to think they don't care.

A type one on insulin and you don't get enough strips to test more than a few times a WEEK?
That can't be right.
If you have a consultant then maybe contact him, or leave a message and ask how you are supposed to cope with so few chances to test.

Think they like you to use urine test strips, which aren't so accurate, I'm spending a fortune on blood ketone strips, i used to only have 10 a month, and asked for more, so now I get 20 a month

Where do you live?
Urine testing was done within living memory, but I doubt there is another type one on the forum who has to try to cope with it these days.

There was a recent thread where some Type 1s said they used urine sticks. I’m one of the people who do.

So - you don't drive then?

One of the very first things we heard about Diabetes and Covid, was that one of the side effects of Covid was ketones appearing at FAR lower BGs than normal for both T1 and T2 patients.

So, first question - has your being Covid positive been absolutely ruled out ? If so, how recently ?
