Hi @Rac123 . Welcome to the forum. Their is an awful lot of misinformation out there about diabetes and some places muddled up the info for T1 and T2.
T2s often need to adapt their diet by reducing carbohydrates.

With T1 it’s different , providing your grandson knows how to adjust his insulin for the carbohydrates he is going to have , he can eat normally .

Their is a book we often recommend on here that you , your grandson and his parents may well find helpful,
Not sure if their is a later edition

He’s pretty lucky, we T1’s, in theroy can eat what we like but as he is a new T1 he’s probably on fixed doses of insulin and won’t have started carb counting yet, after he gets some experience under his belt he will be able to calculate how much fast acting insulin to inject based on the amount of carbs he is eating each in meal.
There is a lot to learn but being a T1 is pretty liveable, I have over 50 years done now and no real problems to speak of
I wish you both the best of luck on his new journey

Thanks . I did wonder about fixed doses.

My grandson has well mom and dad have been doing carb count this is part I don’t understand thankyou for giving me good advie

Hey Lin It’s pretty usual to have fixed doses in the beginning when the team is figuring out ratios, I think it’s easier for them to do calculations.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Your grandson can eat what he likes as he has insulin to cover his food intake. That's the advantage of having type1 diabetes. 🙂

There is a book called carbs and Cals which has all the values in it, there is also an phone app of the same name, I’ve used the app for a few years, it’s not perfect but it’s a great help

Greatoqoll give this a read xx

He’ll have a pretty good understanding of what he wants to eat and how to calculate the carbs for it and I’m sure his parents will be able to advise too. As others have said he can eat anything in theory. The reality we found was that eating big portions of things like pizza can make it harder to match the insulin (1/2 a pizza is fine a full one not so much). It depends if that’s enough food for him. Having options for things that are low or no carb (meat, fish, cheese are all no carb) may give him more food for his meal but have a chat with him about what he wants to eat.

If they have a copy of carbs and cals it’s worth him bringing it along as it makes it easier. You will get the hang of carb counting and I’m sure he’ll be pretty ok with it himself. With my daughter (now 11) I tended to have a conversation with the adult about what she was eating and gave carbs for it and she could then do her own insulin.

Great that your grandson is carb counting. I think that they start teenagers on this pretty quickly.
As others have said he can eat what he wants so long as he can work out the carbohydrates.
It sounds like he is in the ball and perhaps ask him what he wants to do.

Yea he doing good it mom and dad who do who do and his dad always weighed food and done count so that a god send because I’m finding it hard but I will absorb each each day I learn and thank heavens for groups like this thankyou very much for reply

Are you able to spend a day with them, so you can see how their routine is and you may then have more confidence when he come to you.

Yes I’m going to go round this week and sit down with my daughter I’m asking so many questions and I don’t want I overload my daughter so I’ve let them settle and get adjust to things has for my grandson he a typical Kevin and Perry attitude he very sensible and hasn’t got patience for overbearing nan going on but I have learnt a lot nearly there
