to see the dibetic nurse tomorrow since being diagnosed 5 weeks ago
what sort of things should i be asking her ive so many things i want to know but when it comes to writing them down my mind goes blank.
i have really been stuggleing the last few weeks and have been eating loads of junk and i know its wrong but i think i need something to shock back into things .
thanks

It sounds to me like you need to talk to her generally about good diet.

Also maybe ask her what sorts of things they'll be looking out for at your checkups: if the combination of retinopathy (-> blindness), nephropathy (-> kidney failure), neuropathy (-> losing your toes/feet/legs) and heart disease doesn't scare you into action, I have no idea what will.

More positively, ask her for details of eg walking groups to get some kind of exercise routine and face-to-face support - a number of surgeries round here have joined up to create a "diabetic strollers" group that meets regularly and you might find that useful.

You could ask about blood glucose monitors, but not many GPs/DSNs are on board with that, unless you're on insulin.

Hi Stacey, I hope everything goes OK for you. There is no doubt a lot buzzing round in your head still. I would think that the best thing to ask for would be if you can have a blood glucose meter and strips prescribed so that you can learn how your body reacts to different foods - this is the best method of learning how to manage your diabetes well. The nurse may be reluctant, but stand your ground and tell her that you would feel better knowing that you are taking an active part in your diabetes management rather than waiting months to find out if what you are doing is working (because if it isn't, it will be impossible to know what you need to change!).

Good luck! Let us know how things go 🙂

my visit went well thanks she kept telling me to loose weight (ive lost 3st already (before diabetes) and said as my bmi is still high i am able to go to see the diatican and use the local gym for free , also i said i feel not knowing my blood sugars made me a bit free with what i eat so she gave me a prescrition for 2 packs of 50 testing strips :D
she also scanned my feet to check the pluse that was fine , im feeling alot better about it all and im sure once xmas is out of the way i will be back to eating better
thanks everyone

Glad visit went well Stacey 🙂

Stacey I'm really pleased that your visit went well:D

Stacey, Welcome.

Glad the visit went well. You say you have been struggling, but you have already lost 3 stone; that in itself is a major achievement.

You have some test strips, and you sound like you know what has to be done. I don't think you need shocked into it :D I'm sure you will continue what you have already started, I have found the BG testing to be of great benefit, as I am sure you will in keeping you levels under control.

Glad your feeling better about it after the appointment, and good luck

Graeme

Sounds like a really good appointment Stacey - good to see that your nurse is on the ball 🙂 If you want to know how to approach testing methodically, have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S . Keep up the good work! 🙂
