Hi goosey - I confess I don't know anything about cataracts.

Tropicamide eye drops are put in the eyes to temporarily make the pupils larger - the drops do sting a little but that wears off by the time the photographs are taken of the back of the eyes about 10-15 mins later - the camera does not come into contact with your eyes. The photographs are then sent to an expert to review.

Diabetic screening is important as it helps to prevent sight loss - as someone with diabetes, your eyes are at risk of damage from diabetic retinopathy and screening can detect the condition early before you notice any changes to your vision.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when diabetes affects small blood vessels, damaging the part of the eye called the retina - it can cause the blood vessels in the retina to leak or become blocked - this can affect your sight.

Untreated diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of sight loss - so if the condition is caught early then treatment is effective at reducing or preventing damage to your sight.

Having large pupils will make your eyes more sensitive to light especially if it's a sunny day so do take your sunglasses with you to wear after your eye screening.

Hope this helps, good luck & hope for a good result x

RESULT CONFIRMED IN WRITING
I received a letter today confirming my test result saying it appeared normal. But it goes on to says this means I am at very little risk of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy at this time.

It also says Screening detects nearly all early signs of diabetic eye disease. However, very occasionly it can miss changes that could threaten my sight and the following can help reduce my risk of developing sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy in the future:-

* Aim to control blood sugar levels as well as possible
* Make sure blood pressure is monitored regularly
* Go for regular diabetes checks
* Continue to attend regular diabetic eye screening appointments.

This is the second positive result regarding my eye screening test. Next screening 2018.

My thanks to all for your support & good luck wishes - it is appreciated.
