At risk of diabetes
Here is my diabetes story

My wife and I both come from a family with a history of diabetes. So, we both knew that a healthy lifestyle was the way we should live.

I would love to say this has been easy and here are my 7 steps to a healthy lifestyle.
Unfortunately, it has been challenging and made worse as I work long hours in front of a computer screen.
When I found out I was Prediabetic a few years ago, it gave me the urge to do better. In hindsight I should've been more serious when my father was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes several years before.

I joined this forum to share my experience but also to learn from you. I have learnt that wisdom is found in listening to those who are going through the same issues. I know if I don’t start to take diabetes seriously, it will have a negative impact on my life.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I started to reduce my carbs (this was painful), I become more active and looked into sugar alternatives.

I believe the stories and experiences in this forum will help us create innovative foods and drinks that will allow diabetics not to miss out on the sweetness of life. It is helping me so far.

So, if you are a foodie or a chef, please share with us the kind of foods you would like to be sugar free!

Look forward to speaking to you all.

Welcome to the forum @Berry Y

Sorry to hear that you have been told you are at risk of diabetes. Hopefully with your determination to reduce carbs and increase your activity will help you avoid a full diabetes diagnosis.

Were you told the result of your HbA1c check? This can help you understand how close the the diabetes threshold of 48 you currently are, and how significantly you may need to adjust your diet.

While reducing your sugar intake can be helpful, it is important to recognise that it is the total carbohydrate content of a food which is far more important, and that just because something is ‘low sugar’ doesn’t guarantee that it will be suitable for a person at risk of or living with diabetes. For example many members here find breakfast cereals very difficult in BG terms (even if they are the no-added-sugar, high fibre, wholegrain versions) just because of the speed at which our bodies break down starchy carbs into glucose.

Good luck with your diet and exercise changes. Let us know how things go!
