Relationship to Diabetes

I said I would keep you updated so here I go..... My nurse said if I didn't have any symptons, she would have taken more bloods, as my number is "just diabetic". My BP is ok, my sample was ok ( no figures were given on either). She is sending sample to the lab, refering me to the sight clinic? She is prescribing me 1 metformin with breakfast and spoke about diet. She said there is no need to check my bloods at the moment, however I am not sure, as I like to be on top of things. Next Appt in 12 weeks
 
The HbA1C blood test is only taken every 3 months initially for blood glucose levels.

The fact the nurse is putting you on Metformin and referring you to the eye screening unit would suggest you are diabetic. In your situation I would ask the nurse (when you next see her) for a copy of your test results so you can check yourself the HbA1C level and compare from your first test to your next test (remembering to ask for a copy of that too)

You can request from your surgery for password access to your test results online also.

Requesting online results from your surgery is only applicable if your surgery allows access, not all do!

The sight clinic is prefect normal part of Dibatic screening.

As others have said all diabetics are referred to the eye clinic and then automatic annual checks should be put in place by your Practice. It is well worth having the actual figures from them especiallybfor your HbA1 c as it then gives you a figure to compare to at the next test to see if whatever changes you make have had an impact. I know once I was told I ‘was high’. However that was just reading off a sheet and I was in fact well in target for someone with T1. I now just access my numbers through the online results that our Practice give us access to.

It is likely that your surgery will always suggest that there is no need to test, however that seems to me like driving to a destination with a blindfold on and just seeing what happens on the way. They are unlikely to fund the test strips but many on here find thabit is through the testing before and after meals that they are able to adjust their diet effectively and get their glucose levels down.

You need to check on your GP website to see what they require, and don't be suprised if you are not allowed .
 
I use the Tee 2 meter from Spirit Healthcare.
You can phone, or go to the website. If you use the web you put in details and then are sent an email to confirm you are diabetic (which you must be to be being treated for it by the surgery and with the testing) and then you will be able to order supplies free of VAT. You need the meter kit plus a supply of test strips, and lancets too. Some people don't change the lancet some (like me) change it every test, but I am a musician and take no chances with my hands, and the lancets are so cheap anyway, so why not use a fresh one particularly when it might be weeks between tests these days.

Thank you so much for your advice. I was having issues trying to order online, so I rang them and a lovely lady is sending me one out 🙂

Yes I am not doubting that, it appears on a list of things for my online access but tests amongst a few other things are not available from my surgery.

Its not given automatically you have to request it and show up at the surgery for physical ID then a password is created for you to use. I don't suppose it will be happening at this time for new people because of the virus.

You don't get access to all your records, just test results, email communication, future appointments, historical appointments, medication etc.
 
My surgery was similar to @grovesy 's, allowed prescriptions and appointments but not test results, despite several requests, and talking to my GP about it at a February appointment did not help.

However, slight silver lining of CV was that they decided it would be a good idea after all!!

The most affordable meters members here have found are the SD Gluco Navii or the Spirit Tee2 - which both have test strips at around £8 for 50

Let us know how you get on if you start checking your BG 🙂
