Thank-you for your reply and concern. Bill had a rare form of cancer that starts in the back, and can apparently be controlled. He was receiving injections for that purpose that possibly did affect his diabetes? He was managing to live a normal life prior to this. I just hope that the medical profession take note for future reference, anyone in a similar circumstance needs close monitoring and guidance. Thanks once more, Alan.

I hope you can manage some kind of decent Christmas in memory of your brother Alan. Best Wishes and I too hope there’s lessons learned from your brother’s death. Even the medical profession don’t always fully understand the implications of diabetes so don’t beat yourself up.

I am so sorry, please accept my condolences.

I'm so sorry to hear this. There is absolutely nothing that you could have done differently. My condolences to you and your family.

Very sorry for your loss, Alan. Very sad news.

When we lose a loved one we always feel terrible guilt Alan no matter what we’d done or however hard we tried to help. You simply didn’t realise he was at risk and had no idea he could die from the diabetes. Most people wouldn’t and hindsight is a wonderful thing.
It could be it was the medication that caused the problem or perhaps he was already on cancer medication that interacted badly?
His wife thought things would be ok till the next day too and you’re right, people just don’t appreciate that this can be fatal because it is much more unusual in type 2’s and extremely so in those who don’t take medication.

You didn’t have the knowledge you needed but the love and concern was there and this warning will help others to be much more pro-active in a similar situation. Remember him fondly, he was clearly unwell anyway and you’ve no knowing whether the damage was already irreversible. Best wishes.

I didn't realise that diabetes had so many complications and I have learned so much since my original post. I admire you all, Alan.

Really sorry to read your post Alan. Try not to feel guilty it seems that no one realised how serious the situation was. Your positive thoughts about people being more informed are very important. I hope that soon the good memories of your dear brother will help you to remember him at his best, My sincere condolences to you and your family.

Sorry for the sad loss of your brother Alan

Very sorry for your loss, I cannot imagine what effect this has had on the family.

From a clinical point of view, what caused the death will be on the death certificate. If the first cause is complications of diabetes, then so be it. If the first cause is the cancer, then you needn’t worry that diabetes played a major part, and it may well provide some relief to your anguish.

So sorry to hear your story. My brother was T1 like me and he died completely unexpectedly when he was only 25. We never got a proper explanation of the cause of his death but I’ve always wondered if he had a hypo. His girlfriend was away at the time and he was on his own.
