hi , I just wondered if anyone else gets this and if you know what it is , I get what I can only describe as a muscle spasm on the left hand side in the rib area it is really painful and usually happens very rarely and once , the other day after doing a 10hr shift I came home sat down and it happened x4 it's actually quite frightening and this time had left me feeling very tender , any ideas ?

I'm sorry, not a clue. I think it's worth a visit to the surgery to discuss it with your GP though as it's sounds very unpleasant and uncomfortable.

Could be a multitude of reasons Jennywren depending on area, type of pain, sharp, dull, frequency etc. Quite often it's gastro-intestinal in that area but best bet as Alison has said is a visit to your GP.

I have a dull ache under my left side and had an ultrasound some months ago. Mine is due to an enlarged spleen but that's not related to my diabetes. Hope you get it sorted soon.

I'm getting what I though of as ticks, I guess spasms, in my legs. As well as cramps. I wonder if its similar.

Hiya
I get something similar just under my rib, but I know what mine is. I'm hyper mobile and so my joint move more than they should. I have a mobile hip and if I carry a heavy shoulder bag (I carry my bag on the left) it chucks my hip out a bit, this irritates a nerve in that area which then protests when it's released (I relax). It goes away if I carry a cross body bag and let the nerve calm down. I'd mention it to the doctor just in case but if it's mechanical like mine it might be worth noting down when it happens. Me and a neurologist managed to work my weirdness out by a diary I kept of everything I was doing, and it always flared up when I was travelling for work (aside from trains the only other factor was my giant weekend bag!) 🙂. The neurologist also told me that most people miss repetitive strain injuries because more often than not the pain starts when they stop the activity and the nerve starts to recover so they don't make the connection.

I'd go with the advice have a chat to your doctor. When does it mainly happen? Does it happen after a long shift at work or if you are feeling stressed? Had you been lifting anything heavy? Although it is painful and difficult to do stuff when it happens it could only be a muscle spasm.

Both my husband and I sometimes get cramp in our ribs! Ouch! but no idea under what circs we get it. Never asked a medic how or why.

Good thing is, it does respond to massage, like normal calf-cramp would.

Thanks for suggestions , it does feel very tense in that area sometimes it almost feels like something's turning over .

Did you ever get a diagnosis? I have been suffering the same for about 12 months now. I have asked the doctor, and he prescribed low dose diazepam as a muscle relaxant, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

T2, on 75 units of Lantus daily, Met & Gliclazide

Unfortunately Jenny hasn't visited the forum since June last year, so is unlikely to see your question.
