has anyone ever heard that taking multivitamins increases blood sugar levels.

I am type 2 diet only, I was prescribed metformin but try to manage with diet as the metformin make me feel sick all the time and have always managed very well with HBA1C around 6.5. I was taking a vitamin B50 complex and a pomegranite supplement but recently changed from the B50 to multivitamins. I find my post meal test is now much higher than it used to be (around 8 now often above 12) this morning after a breakfast of slice of thin toast, plain yoghurt and about four small pieces of honeydew melon I was alarmed to read my level at nearly 15.

I am shall be reverting back to the B50 complex to see if it makes a differance, just wondered if anyone had had the same problem with multivitamins

Thanks

I am type 1 and take a daily multivitamin in the morning with BP medication, so far there has been no noticeable effect on BG, however at that time in the morning I am fight increased resistance/dawn phenomenon, so trying to gather meaningful BG information at this time is hard for me personally.......

🙂

I've not had (or heard of) any BG impact from multi vits either.

Do they have any carb info on them? Are they sweetened?

Hi Imalia,
it sounds to me as if you need to talk to your GP regarding your medication or lack of.
There's a slow release form of metformin that can be used which doesn't have the same side effects.
Your pancreas is now telling you that it needs help to cope with any food, so for your own sake best to go and have a chat with GP. 🙂

I used to take multivits but stopped a while ago - I don't think they had any effect on my BG levels at all.

Your multivitamins bottle should list the ingredients, it's unlikely that they will have much in the way of carbs (maybe some cornstarch, but little quantity), more likely your melon and toast. Possibly something on your finger?

However if you are getting 12s and 15s (although you don't say when you test post your meal, is this 1hour or 2 hours or immediate) as readings you certainly should see your GP about trying SR Glucophage (slow release metformin) or something else.

You need to test before eating as well as after it, to see if the food is what increased your BG or whether it was already high to begin with?

I mean if it was 13 before you ate and 15 after, an increase of 2 is pretty OK. However - you would need to take steps to reduce the 13 beforehand!
