Hello again, I’ve bought a BG meter this week, thanks for the advice. My fasting readings have been around 8 despite having nothing to eat after teatime. I can’t get to sleep because I’m hungry so I had ONE cracker and a piece of cheese last night at 9pm and my bg was 9.1 this morning.
Any suggestions for a bedtime snack please?
 
Some people find blood glucose in the morning after a period of fasting as the liver tries to be super helpful and releases glucose into the system thus increasing levels. It can depend on when you take your measurement as the very act of getting out of bed can be enough.
If you are hungry at bedtime that suggests you are not having a substantial enough meal at dinner time consisting of protein and healthy fats as well as veg or salad.
A desert of something like full fat Greek yoghurt with berries or Kvarg deserts which are low carb but high protein.
 
I have the cheese but no cracker. Sometimes (like last night) with a tiny glass of port or red wine. It was crumbly Lancashire and smoked Cheddar last night with port. Yum! Olives with feta work well too.
I have to say, I almost never feel hungry these days though! Eating less carbs and more fat stopped all that.
 
Sorry to hear your BG readings in the mornings have been higher than you’d like @Midgie

Unfortunately these can be the last ones to come into line, and part of that stubbornness is possibly linked to Dawn Phenomenon (or Foot on the Floor). These are part of the body’s natural circadian rhythm, and involve the liver releasing stored glucose either in the early hours, or as a response to you getting out of bed, in order to ‘fire up the burners’ for the day.

It’s something that everyone gets, though some have it more markedly than others. Having a lowish carb snack late at night can help to keep the liver happy and reduce the effect for some, and eating soon after rising can help for others.

It’s a common challenge though, so don’t worry. It’s not just you that gets this, and it’s not that you are doing anything ‘wrong’ 🙂
