Fascinating. I do wonder if I could have it - VERY sensitive to insulin, I'm on 10u basal, the highest amount of bolus is 2.3u in the morning. After meals I always have a high reading. and i have a low renal threshold, around 8. As a child I never got a blue reading in my urine tests unless i was hypo, they were always orange, and so i stoped doing them as they made me so upset!

Hey, thankyou for this thread. Just got recommended it in my newbie post. I certainly agree that there is some ignorance about this, there are mean people out there!

I'm possible MODY, diagnosed Type 1 had high blood sugars on insulin for 6 months then had to be taken off its been two years now. Though noone in my family has been found to be MODY though I have my suspisions about my dad, his mum my nan was said to be borderline diabetic too so perhaps this is where its come from!

How have you found doctor/nurse support to be? Do you have a specialist?

Hiya,

I go to a specialist genetic diabetes clinic and my DSN is one of the genetic link nurses so I have always had great care. If you think that you might have a form of MODY then i would suggest that you contact your local gentic nurse they can assess if they think it's worth testing you. if you've got any questions then I am happy to try and help.

No. But my dad's dad had type 2 and died of gangrene as his foot got run over by a pram and he had to have his leg amputated.

There is no-one else though.

I'd really appreciate some better help really, i'm going to go visit my doctor sometime soon to get more 'stuff'. I think i'm going to pluck up the courage to ask him about it, though i'm not sure he even knows there is specialist testing for it? I've looked on the Exeter website about it and found the genetic nurse in my area but I think its best to speak to my doctor first.

Have you been told how high is dangerous for a MODY without insulin? Since I do get readings of 10 - 15 after i've eaten pasta or something and more obviously when i've just eaten loooooads, though its normally back down below ten in a couple hours.

I also have a problem with hypos where I feel really bad at about 3.5, i shouldn't get that low :( Its a gradual low however and happens whatever I eat, I was worried about insulin resistance but then it could just be that I simply need to eat?

Do you know if one of your parents has to have diabetes in order for a diagnosis of MODY to be made? It was initially thought that I had MODY as I was on tablets for quite a while and my diabetes has never been considered classic type 1. My DSN talked to my parents and they both had glucose tolerence tests which were negative so I was told it couldn't be MODY after all. My brother is type 1 and I have several relatives that have/had type 2.

Thanks.
